Im not sure wat i did to cause this, but almost everything i try to open gives an error message like this:

Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.

it occured right after i tried opening a file with paint..... thr error appear when i try opening them? It affects most other programs too... I cant open anything in the control panel.
no, not yet..... you have adaware i see... how about running spybot?[link below]
After that send us a Hijack this log to this thread[it may shed light onto your problem thru the feedback you get here from it]... Link is below for the 2 tools.
Read the hijack this setup below carefully...not hard to set up tho'. Its very important that you save the log to its own permanent folder on your hard drive, such as Program Files/Hijack This, or My Documents/Hijack This,(not temporary files) or you may loose the ability to undo any changes you make, so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.
Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click Scan. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to Save Log. Click on Save Log and then save it to NotePad. Click on Edit Select all copy and then paste into the thread.
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET;- Await further analysis here.
ps.Anyone in the know, think he should also run that kazaa begone tool-of which i'm minutely familiar!
um.... i downloaded it. But cant open. The following message appeared:
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows XP\Desktop\CWShredder.exe
Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows XP\Desktop\spybotsd13.exe
Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.

i see one thing needs to be fixed, but I'm letting someone more worthy come by and rigouressly go through your items to give you an excellent analysis. yes-- Whitphil, nice tip[i've archived it ].
Do the same renaming trick with Spybot, run it and allow it to delete what it finds. (some of the following items may disappear)
Then, Run HiJackThis again (you should really put it in it's own folder as opposed to in the root of C:\. It will create backups that will just clutter up the root)
Then select and delete the following:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00041A26-7033-432C-94C7-6371DE343822} - (no file)

Run HJT again. From the main screen select Config, then Misc Tools
Select both List Also Minor sections and List Empty Sections
Then Generate StartupList log
this may be a long shot but go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options. Under File Types, look for EXE. It may have an icon and/or description of Paint. If so remove it.
