ok, Im running Win XP Pro. Yesterday I downloaded a file that didn't do what it was supposed to. I think it loaded something bad. It immedeately, instead of running its program, brought up winace and compressed something that looked like a installation archive. I thought little of it till an hour or two later it did it again but was not prompted by anything I did, hence, by itself. so first thing I did was to install my Norton Antivirus. Well I'm not sure of the exact sequence of actions but after rebooting the computer tells me on ALMOST all executable files that it can not find the .exe file in the path it IS in and that I should search for it. Even if I open it from the actual .exe file and not the shortcut it still says it can not find the file. And since rundll32.exe wont run I can do little to the computer.
I used an online virus detection later last night and it found 14 files I think that all were noted as Trojan. I deleted all of them but it changed nothing. I have read some of the other posts and tried to follow the directions but can't run the programs even if I open them and bypass saving them. I'm very confused and now I'm getting the "messenger service" pop-ups. Please help.

Welcome to TSG :) You have a CWS hijack amongst others...
Go to http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html , and download the latest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This.
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.
And remember to click "Fix" (Not "Scan only")
After its done its thing hit the"How do i prevent reinfection" tab....
In particular pay attention to the patches for the operating system regarding the ByteVerify vulnerability which is how you got infected in the 1st place.

When it is finished restart your computer.

Click "Start" and then "Run" and type the following command:
    regsvr32 c:\winnt\twaintec.dll

Run hijackthis again and put a checkmark against these entries....double check
    in case you miss anything....
.....then,close all browser and outlook windowsincluding this one and "fix checked"

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://helpdesk.its.bethel.edu/resnet/Documents/Antivirus/Safemode.html
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Locate and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\alchem.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\twaintec.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SMSSkx.ex

    Download AdAware 6 181 from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    Then......

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    Then.........

Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu)

    Now re-boot...

    Then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED

    Consider installing the following:

SpywareBlaster v 3.0 and SpywareGuard v2.2, to prevent Active-X drive-by installations, as well as provide real-time browser hijacking protection: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/index.html

IE-SPYAD, a registry file that adds a long list of known "sites" to the Restricted Sites of your Internet Explorer: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

    ;)
