Norton Antivirus has detected the following two files on my laptop computer...

W32.Desktophijack
Trojan.Desktophijack.B

... but is unable to remove them. There is a new blue background on my desktop which has the following writing in the centre...

Security warning
A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) +
00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
* System cannot function in normal mode.
Please check you security settings.
* Scan your PC with any avaliable antivirus / spyware remover
program to fix the problem.

...I cannot change this background as the tabs in Display Properties have been removed except for Screen Saver and Settings.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Unzip smitRem.zip to extract the two files it contains.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

Go here to download CCleaner.
  • Install CCleaner
  • Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the Options button.
  • Click Advanced and remove the check by Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Click OK
  • Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

Click here to download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install Ewido.
  • During the installation, under Additional Optionsuncheck[ b]Install background guard[/b] and Install scan via context menu.
  • Launch Ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Now go ahead and set your computer to show hidden files like so:

Go to Start – Search and under More advanced search options, make sure there is a check by Search System Folders and Search hidden files and folders and Search system subfolders.

Next, click on My Computer, Go to Tools – Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is checked. Also uncheck Hide protected operating system files and Hide extensions for known file types. Now click Apply to all folders. Click Apply and then OK.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp3A8D.tmp (file missing)

If you didn't place these in the trusted zone intentionally then include them, otherwise, leave them:
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the Paste Full Path of File to Delete box.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp3A8D.tmp

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure not to miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Put a check by the following before you scan:
    • Binder
      [*]Crypter
      [*]Archives
  • Click the Start Scan button to start the scan.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Start CCleaner and click Run Cleaner

Go to Control Panel – Internet Options. Click on the Programstab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.

Next go to Control Panel – Display. Click on the Desktop tab then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see an entry checked called something like Security info or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, have it delete anything that it cannot clean. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself. - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan and the Ewido scan

Before doing the above, please be sure to disable Microsoft AntiSpyware or it will interfere with the fix.

Click on Tools, Settings. In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).

Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).

After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Thanks for all your help, things are definitely working again. But the Panda ActiveScan didn't seem to be able to remove the files it found and Norton is still saying that it's detecting W32.Desktophijack (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL).

Thanks again.

To regain your display tabs, run this .reg file and allow it to enter into the registry.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/restorealldisplaytabs.reg

Rescan with Hijack This and have it fix this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intel32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intel32.exe

Run Killbox on this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\intel32.exe

We can replace the wininet.dll file but we need to eradicate the infection first.

Reboot and post another Hijack This log and please do another Panda scan and post that log as well.

Run the Killbox on these files:

C:\WINDOWS\usta33.ini

C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\PSGuard.lnk

C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\Downloaded Program Files\mm63.INF

Then, in safe mode, locate and delete these folders:

C:\Program Files\AdTools Service

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\PSGuard

How's everything running now?

Is the trojan still being detected?

Everything seems to be running fine - I can change the background and Internet Explorer is working too.

However, Norton is still detecting the virus W32.Desktophijack (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL).

First to be safe go to the link below and download a copy of wininet.dll just in case you need it:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wininet

Click on My Computer. Go to Tools - Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is checked. Also uncheck Hide protected operating system files and Hide extensions for known file types. Now click Apply to all folders
. Click Apply then OK

Restart into safe mode.

Now navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and locate the wininet.dll file there. Right click it and choose Rename. Rename the file to wininet.old. Now go to View and click Refresh. Windows file protection should replace the wininet.dll file. Look to verify that it has been replaced.

If it has not been replaced go to the C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and find the wininet.dll file there. Copy it and then paste it in the System32 folder.

If none of the above work, unzip the wininet.dll file you downloaded and copy it to the system32 folder.

I did that, found the wininet.dll file in the dllcache folder. Should I delete the wininet.old file?

Also when I first rebooted, Internet Explorer wasn't working, but then I rebooted again and now it is.
