I bought a brand new compter 2 weeks ago and I HATE it. I have DSL but this computer is slower then a computer on dial-up....
I click and wait & wait.... ugh!
I bought a windows XP 2 years ago and was on DSL and it was fast. But I gave it to hubby and bought this new one which is actually the same computer. This computer is so slow that I'm ready to throw it out the door. Can anyone figure out what would be my problem with this one?

Thank you, Chara
here is the new computer info-
Microsoft windows XP
Home Edition
Service Pack 2
HP
2.93 GHZ
248 MB of RAM

248 MB of RAM

That would be the problem. Looks like you have 256Mb with 8Mb used for video. You need minimum 512Mb

I would agree with Tidus that you are low on memory, but that being said you may have gotten infected

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
log here.

256K is barely enough to run Windows XP---it can be done but it could be the problem

man, I always forget to post the spy stuff :D

Yeah if you did not have any protection like a firewall or spyware blocker when you connected to the net then you will be infected with something. I was on my new machine for 1/2 hour and I had 8 intrusions blocked and 5 were critical...

I saw in your signature in your profile that you have 'Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB'

When your memory is used up (since you have 256Mb, that would be all the time) it will use the virtual memory, which is basically hard disc space. If the VMem is on the C: drive, then the system will slow down tremendously since the system and memory is fighting for the 'attention' of the drive. If you have an extra drive that can spare 3Gb (which is the maximum you need for memory), change the drive that uses the VM to that drive. That should help with the speed somewhat.

Should be under Control Panel > System > Advanced. I'm on a Windows 2000 machine right now so i'm doing this from my head. Under Performance, highlight the drive that has the numbers (should be C:\). Set it to No pagefile. Then highlight the alternative drive and give it minium 2mb and maximum 3000Mb (or what ever the maximum is.) When you are done, you will need to restart.
