My homepage keeps changing to some websearch pages, and it is starting to annoy me. Even when I change it in Internet Options to a page that I like, the next time that I open up the browser, it is back to the websearch pages. Furthermore, I get an isearch toolbar that I dont like at all.

Once these things appeared, my IE browser crashes regularly and pages spontaniously open or change to innappropriate websites.

I have checked my startup folder and found nothing suspicious. I have also went to Add/Remove programs and can't find anything. I have opened up System Information and am looking at my startup programs, and its all foreign jargon to me. My teacher from school suggested using regedit, but I am in no way comfortable using that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I have downloaded Hijack This, too.
Here is my log... again, I don't really undestand what this stuff means.
    Thanks in advance.

You do have quite a collection of stuff in there.

Please download and run the following programs.
    Download CWShredder

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

Then restart your computer and post another log.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the security patches and critical updates.

    AD-AWARE

    Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
    and download Ad-Aware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right-hand corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window: Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer

Download and run: SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY, here:

    http://download.com.com/3000-2144-1...tml?tag=lst-0-1

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems'', Put a check in every entry Spybot Search & Destroy flags with a red exclamation mark and click ''Fix Selected Problems'' , Then restart your computer.

Download both of these for added protection: SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD, here:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Once you've done all that and after rebooting, post another log here please.

Thank you SOOOO much! Those programs you recommended did the job perfectly!

    I appreciate this so much.

Now I have a slew of programs to keep my system secure, and for that, you have my regards.

You need to post another Hijack This log. There are some entries there that will have to be fixed with HJT and files to delete.

It's a pleasure to help out. What I did with you was preliminary stuff to get rid of some junk and install some added protection but there was more work to do, as Flrman1 mentioned.

If you continue to follow his advice, you'll soon be in tip top shape :D

    Good luck,

    Cookie :)

Alright, I rebooted in safe mode and was able to remove some of the files you listed. However, I was not able to find dgzqxmd.exe, gxmzqbqh.exe, irwngf.exe or twj.exe. Maybe HiJack This was already able to get rid of them?

Furthermore, I have a couple of questions. How come I had to repair my services and p2p folders? And why did I have to delete the services folder? Also, what was wrong with the about:blank stuff? I am just wondering, because all of that terminology I have heard before, so when I first saw them, they didn't strike me as suspicious in any way.

    Thank you for your help.

To answer your question, in short, it was all junk put there by spyware/malware and hijackers.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &iSearch The Web - res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML

Restart to safe mode and delete:

    The C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking folder

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

Regarding your question about p2p, you will keep having these problems unless you stop using stuff like that.
