Hello, hope you can help me.

I downloaded a file from the web yesterday and when I installed it, it A) didn't work and B) kindly installed a trojan on my PC. I checked the files I was running and found WINDATA.EXE in Windows and MSJIS.EXE in Windows/System.

Looked these little buggers up on t'internet and found they were two parts of the same trojan called Petala. The F-Secure virus package promised to zap them, so I downloaded this, did a scan and it said that both files were not infected. Yeah, right.

It also found another trojan called Elesor. This consists of a file called tmksrvl.exe in C:/ F-Secure couldn't even disinfect this - it just "renamed" it as tmksrvl.0xe.

I'd really like to zap both trojans so any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Andy

Let's see what can be seen.
Post the scan log from HijackThis
Unzip somewhere to keep and run hijackthis.exe - press scan - the Scan button changes to a Save Log button. Save, and then copy and paste the entire log here.
Dont' choose to fix anything yet - most entries will be harmless

Do you use IRC? If so, which client?

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I disabled the Petala trojan by using msconfig and then unchecking the items in the start-up list. I was then able to do a secure delete on them. The other I was also able to secure-delete.

Everything seems back to normal now, although there is still a run command for Petala in win.ini. I have unchecked it but is there any way to completely delete it?

Also, the right-click function to open webpages in a new window is no longer working since I had these trojans. Anyway to fix this?

    Cheers.

Re-enable these three ? entries using msconfig - but do not reboot when prompted.
Run HJT and press Scan - they should now show.
Place a check next to these items.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HJT Fix all checked items.

The 2 run (startup) entries should be removed from the registry by HijackThis, and the F1 or F0 item (the .ini file entry) should be rewritten in it's default form when HJT fixes them.
