I got for the second time in the last month a XP Security Center virus today. It prevents you from opening the web or most other programs and keeps popping up danger warning boxes trying to sell fake anti virus programs. I also could not start System Restore. What I did was reboot into safe mode and start System Restore from there. That got it all back to normal. Then, after it reboots I run Malware Bytes and it finds these randomly-named exe files and deletes them.

Why do I keep getting this? It came on to my computer all by itself from the rogue web page. It just shut down firefox all by itself, installed itself, and did its thing. I have the latest version of Firefox, avast anti-virus running with latest definitions, and also ad-aware running. I thought firefox was supposed to be better than IE at not letting applications take control?? But it did. Also the anti virus program (avast) was of no use in preventing this. How can I prevent these things from getting in next time?

Also, Is there an easier way to get rid of or block this XP Security Center stuff ?

Ok, the reason I put it here was I figured it was a general question - I solved my virus hijack. But maybe the moderator can move it if its really doesn't belong here?

Using the latest version of Firefox is great. Did you update your Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader ? Generally, all software that takes input from the internet must be kept up to date, that includes your media player and chat programs. Your media player is used to play songs and movies downloaded from the net, so it takes 'input' from the net.

I read there is an unpatched Flash vulnerability recently. Maybe it is time to disable Flash for the time being until a patch is released.

I have the latest Flash and Reader versions. I'm not sure what version my Windows Media Player is but I was not using it at the time nor a chat program.

TheShooter93 most likely thought you were wanting help to remove the infection and asked you to post in the Virus and Malware Removal forum. It's OK to ask general security questions in this forum, so I will attempt a reply about infections and how you get them.

    1. Not keeping up with Windows Updates- some malware takes advantage of found vulnerabilities (and these are what critical updates are fixing most often).

    2. Older versions of software or plug-ins for the browser - for example, Adobe Flash Player and Java- updated versions are issued about every month. Certain malwares are known to use the older versions that may be left on the computer even if you do update to the newest version.

There are quite a few ways you can get infected, and getting RE-infected is often easier if the malware has changed settings on your computer.

As well, if you used a System Restore back to put the computer back after doing a malware removal, you might have a malware return. Then, infected email, IM links, social network sites and PeertoPeer file sharing lead the list of ways to pick up malwares.....

Here> at the end of a lot of our "Solved" malware removal threads, the advisors post many tips about security and how to prevent malware attacks http://forums.techguy.org/virus-oth...8323-possible-probable-malware-infection.html ((there are many other threads with different links and tips))

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but the reason BML's computer appears to keep getting reinfected is that it hasn't been cleaned. He has a variant of the Braviax rogue. Some of the variants are easy to remove, and some are impossible. My current success rate at removing this is around 50-60%. I've reformatted more computers due to this infection in the last week than I have in the last 2-3 years. The thread really does need to be moved.

What I had was very similar to what described in that link. I did have some 3-letter exe files but Malware Bytes got rid of it, I think. Nothing else has come up in scans; I dont know, what else should I be looking for?

I doubt that it is fully clean & you will be continually reinfected. It is highly likely that you have a TDSS style bootkit as well, se we need to look deeply to see what has been missed by the automatic cleaning tools/antiviruses

follow advice here and post the logs those programs make

I attached the "attach" text file, and tried to paste the text from "ark" but it would not save the thread so I just attached that too.

yes you do still have malware there
Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully
Do not edit or remove any information or user names etc, otherwise we cannot fix the problem. If you insist on editing out anything then I will close the topic & refuse to offer any help.

Download ComboFix from Here or Hereto your Desktop.
As you download it rename it to username123.exe

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
    • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on renamed combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this. Once the recovery console is installed Combofix will then offer to scan for malware. Select continue or yes.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

Please tell us if it has cured the problems or if there are any outstanding issues

Ok, I did the combofix. Here's the log. I see that it reset my browser to IE but it also popped up a warning about being infected or something.....I'm not sure where that warning came from but I was able to open firefox thru start, run & am typing this in firefox. It allows me to go online here but I'm not sure what else will happen. I did not have this prior to combofix.

What popped up a warning about being infected
If it was combofix, then that was normal . If it was your antivirus, then please post the log it made so we can see.
Often an antivirus will only see an infected filew, once combofix attempts to open it or delete it

    Next step

    Run tdss killer from http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

let it cure anything it fnds ( except SPTD.SYS, which should be ignored) & then reboot

    post back with its log
