I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP WITH THIS - I'M STILL A NOVICE & I'M LOST!

I wanted to include the download of the free SysInfo utility u mention, I did it once b4. But now when I click on it I think it is telling me to go to an Apps store - or I can try outside the Apps store, but you're recommending not to. I'm still a novice & everything keeps getting more complicated all the time. I'm not even familiar to the Apps store, although I hear it mentioned a lot.

I have a used (but not real old I think) Gateway desktop computer. Somebody got a new computer & gave me his old one. I don't know what info I should specifically include here for someone to help me with my problem. Usually I write very long E-mails or like here - I'll usually include a lot of info not knowing what might be helpful or not. I'll try not to be too long here - THIS PROBLEM I HAVE IS DRIVING ME NUTS.

OK - my computer is using Windows 10 OS. I wanted to go from XP pro to Windows 7, but the person who set it up for me just used W - 10 I guess cause he thought it best.

Anyway - I started getting this blue dialog box coming up with white print which would tell me there were updates to 10 that I should install. One of the choices it gave at first was "remind me later" which I used. It said these updates were going to take some time. Anyway, the next time it came up, I clicked on go ahead with updates. You can't do anything with your computer while theses are being installed.

I think it took about 2 and 1/2 hours & it ended up with this message. Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows, restart the computer & then restart the installation. So in that dialog box I just clicked the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the dialog box. Then it says its putting your previous version of Windows back - which I wanted - it had been working fine for me. This then takes about 20 minutes.

So now that blue dialog box still comes up, but it doesn't give u an option to remind u later. The computer will allow u to do nothing until u say it's OK to do the updates now. There is no "X" to click on to get rid of that box. Bringing up the Task Manager doesn't help - it comes up behind the update dialog box & with the small part of it u can see, u can tell it wont work either.

So the last time I used my computer earlier tonight, the update box pops up as soon as I take the computer out of "sleep mode". So it is forcing me to say OK and it will just waste 2 and 1/2 hours - well closer to 3 I think b4 I can get it working right again. I tried every way I could think of to make it go away, but it wont.

So, I shut off the computer which I hardly ever do....I use the sleep mode when I'm not going to be using it.
When I started t it again - thankfully the dialog update box was gone. So I did a few things on my computer that needed to be done - & then just closed the programs I had used (on both monitors, I have 2 obviously). So the computer looks right. The desktop is up with my shortcuts on 1 monitor.

Around 45 minutes later I knew I was going to need to use the computer again. When I get to it.....DAMN. The update program had just stated running out of the blue. When I left the computer the update dialog box wasn't up, & if it came up in the short time I was away - I never clicked on anything! So another 3 hour waste. It always has the same message at the end.

I don't know if this info is needed. But where I lived for many years b4 I moved 6 months ago......My ISP was Comcast. Where I live now is in a big building that has 300 condo's. Their default internet hook-up which is included in your monthly fees is....EarthLink Wi-Fi (I'm almost sure). I was glad to shed Comcast.

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP WITH THIS - I'M LOST.

Thanks for your reply. The make is Gateway. The model is DX4860. And the serial number is DTGD4AA00421001D776300

The number 0 seems small here for some reason. But I'm pretty sure all the o's are zero's & not Capital O's or regular letter o's.

Thanks very much for the reply again texasbullet. I used the link u gave me & there sure is a lot of info there.

Which topic are u recommending that I do? I'm guessing its the.....Turn off Windows Updates in Windows 10.

It looks to me that if I do that - it will not only stop the current updates that don't work now. But also, other ones down the line that might work. But then to get those to work, it looks like I might have to go back to these updates that are not working - and get them to work somehow, or I will be out of luck for future updates that might be important.

Boy I wish that guy would have just left this with OS Windows 7 like he was supposed to. But that is water over the damn now.

This stuff is so complicated. Bottom Line - is what you are telling me to do now is like I mentioned earlier........Turn off Windows Updates in Windows 10.

And if that is what I should do - is there something else I should do in addition to that. I also don't understand why Microsoft would do as it says on that page the following.........There is no option to turn off Windows Updates using the Control Panel or Settings app in Windows 10, as it used to be with earlier versions of Windows.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me with this. I'll try to make this the last reply to this topic.....but will u please answer this one.

You can just turn off the updates (disable) and if you want to install the updates just turn it on monthly to check any updates or just leave it off. That is up to you to decide.
You can also uninstall some updates if you want to but once you turn on the updates, you will have those updates installed again.

If you still have your W7 activation key sticker on your computer you can download W7 from here and install it back again.

    Thanks again texasbullet.

As far as switching back to OS7, my comment about that was misleading I think. OK - I'm 64. Moved from AZ to GA in 2004. Didn't know anything about computers then. When I lived out West I played poker for money (only way to play it obviously) all the time in the poker rooms at Casinos.

When I moved to GA, no Casinos anywhere. But by this time there were lots of online poker rooms. So I started with computers in 2004 because of that. I'm self taught thru books & CD's. I did find other stuff I liked to do on computers, but I'm still way behind most people here for sure.

By the way, the American government started to try & stop online poker in 2006 (a politician put a bill with another big bill he knew was gonna pass, so the little bill he attached wasn't debated or even known by the public till after it passed).

He wanted people to spend money (probably his lobbyist's did) on state lotteries, horse racing, & stuff like that. All the other countries let their people decide on their own if they wanted to play online poker or not. So American online poker has been going downhill ever since. There are only a few sites to play at for Americans now & they are really lousy compared to many of the sites that were forced to leave the American market. America - the land of the free..........not.

I could go on about this, but I know this isn't the topic. All 3 computers I've gone thru have been given to me used. The 1st two had XP-pro & I used that for most of the years until Microsoft quit supporting it. I then had somebody change it to Windows OS7 because I heard this system was still gonna be around for a long time & I heard the next step after XL was Vista & people had bad things to say about that one.

I just mentioned I'd like 7 back cause I was thinking it might not be forcing me to keep downloading updates that I knew wouldn't work and took a lot of time. I probably know as much about 10 as I do about 7, which is not much. I just try to avoid doing anything on the computers I've had that would cause problems.

Like I learned early not to ever mess with my computers registry. Anyway, thanks again for your help & believe it or not I now have another problem I didn't have when I started this thread.

I moved about 6 months ago from a place I had lived for years. And because of the ISP I have now which is included in my condo fees here, I've had to change my E-mail address and am now using gmail. The 6 months I've lived here I would just go to a blank google page & click on "Gmail".

But now my computer is bossing me around again. Instead of going str8 to my gmail stuff.....it goes to a page where I have to enter either my E-mail or username I think. Then after that it takes me to a page where I have to enter my Google password.

I can do this, but it is time consuming. I'm the only one who uses this computer. I also am not sure if I changed my E-mail address for my Google or "Tech Guy" account. If I go to the top of this page & click on home, it takes me to that page. But when I get there its asking me to sign in again to this site. When I click on "log in" it automatically takes me right back here to "Forums".

So Bottom Line this time.....CAN U TELL ME HOW TO GET MY GMAIL TO COME UP RIGHT AWAY AGAIN WHEN I CLICK ON IT.

AND - HOW DO I CHECK HERE TO SEE IF MY NEW E-MAIL WAS PUT IN HERE - I'M GUESSING IT'S MY OLD ONE.

THANKS AGAIN VERY MUCH texasbullet. I KNOW U ARE GOING ABOVE THE PALE TO HELP ME WITH THESE QUESTIONS THAT I'M SURE ARE 2ND NATURE TO YOU.

SOME STUFF THAT I'M INTERESTED IN ON COMPUTERS LIKE PLAYING POKER ARE 2ND NATURE TO ME NOW.

BUT MOST OF THE ARCHITETUAL UNDERLYING STUFF THAT MAKES COMPUTERS WORK IS STILL CHINESE TO ME.

I also have another recent problem that u would probably know how to fix. But this is way too long already, I'll save it for a future thread.

On my latest reply I had just put a picture of Texas & a bullet at the end. When I tried to align them....THE WHOLE REPLY DISAPPEARED. I had to search & thankfully found it in the "history".

Then I just posted the reply with no pictures. But after posting the reply it shows the pictures as attached files I guess. LOL - I don't know why that happened.

You may need to send a PM to either the administrator or a moderator to help you in changing your email or other suggestions you may have.
Also, do not use all caps when asking questions. Administrators or Moderators may think that you are yelling.
