I see where you said it is not reading anything. Watch when your booting and see if it shows on the first screen. If you need to, you can use the pause to stop it and look. Just hit enter after to resume. Also look in device manager and see if it is listed. If it is, is there a yellow ! or ? in front of it. Is the light flashing at any time at all, even when booting?

    PM from poster:

    it is a original cd

    *******

Can you boot with a windows bootable floppy disk, choose start with cdrom support and attempt to read a cd from there?

And the operating system information would help as well ;)

There are no yellow exclamation or question marks in device manager

Please post back here as it is easier for us to help you if everyone can see your replies.

Try what candy suggested with the boot disk.

If that does not work open the case and carefully remove the data cable and then put right back on. Do this on bother ends making sure to keep it exactly like it was. Occasionally corrosion builds up on the pins and this takes care of that.

Also have you tried running a disk cleaner? If the lens gets dirty it won't read either.
