I am not too savy with networks but it seems to me that I have a problem with my wireless connection.

First off the connection has become quite slow and keeps dropping. This is a recent thing the last week or so. There are 6 laptops connected to it wirelessly but not all at the same time. At most 4 would be. But even when only 2 are its still a problem.

When I look at the wireless connection status in the system tray the data sent is greater than the data received. This seems odd.

Also internet explorer (IE7) has become increasingly unstable as well. It freezes and needs to close at least twice a day. I have started using firefox. This change has improved things but it too has problems from time to time.

    System spec:
Acer aspire 1300 (old I know)
    Running XP home (fully patched)
Wireless router is D-link (model DI-524)(802.11g)
    Using a unex WLAN cardbus MR012i (802.11b)

Did you do malware/spyware scans? Frequently, a lot of outgoing traffic is malware based. Also, do you have encryption enabled on your wireless link? WPA or WPA2 is best, WEP is pretty easily cracked if you have someone that really wants to get into your network.

    Welcome to TSG (y)

Do you have any firewall software on your PC's?

JohnWill: I do regular scans (once a week) using spybot and/or adware 2007. I did one just there and it turned up nothing. I don't know which typr of incription is used but I suspect its WEP. How would I find out?

dez_66: Thanks. I have the comodo firewall installed and active. Currently its set at its highest security setting.

I should mention that today the data being sent is not even close to what has been received. I am the only one on the connection at the minute aswell.

What utility (usually adapter's or Windows' WZC) are you using to manage the wireless connection? And are you sure that the other one is not running?

Have you tried an ethernet connection to determine whether it's a wireless problem or a problem with the computer in general?

At this point, I'd consider looking at the traffic with WireShark when you see the outgoing count running for no particular reason.
