I want complete access to my comp at my parents house from my comp at my sisters pad.
How would I go about doing this?
It would mostly just be for grabbing files.

"complete access" would require very long arms, and a long neck! :D

To grab files, I'd install an FTP server, a good free one is FileZilla. If you want to have a remote console capability, I use UltraVNC for that task, and it also has file transfer capability.

When I want a lot of files at a remote location, I just grab the 60gig 2.5" USB drive I have, smaller than a pack of cigarettes, and take it along.

You could also set up a VPN server on your parents computer and a VPN client on yours.

Why wouldn't a VPN work through the modem?

How was it set up (both server and client)
    What was the modem?
    What were the errors?

As johnwill suggested, you might just set up a FTP server. I've also used remote access software like RADMIN ($35) to transfer files as well.

Hey, GoToMyPC (think that's right) is supposed to be a good program to grant you access to your machine from any other machine.

Yep, GoToMyPc is a subscription site, not exactly a cheap way to solve this issue. :)

Have you downloaded UltraVNC? If so, have you been to the developer's site at the product name dot com. (don't know if that is advertising :)) They have all the steps to install, setup, and configure the program. Didn't know about GoToMyPC that much, just kept hearing about it.
