First, I am 65 years old. I know some things about a computer, other things stump me. My 65 y.o. cousin brought me her computer to fix...LOL! She said she went to bed one night and her Toshiba laptop was working great. The next morning it was not the same laptop. Overnight, without her permission, Windows 10 downloaded. She quit using it after a few days because she could not figure it out, instead using an ipad. However, there are things on it and times she needs to use it. I told her I thought I could get Windows 7 back, even though it was past the 31 days. Long story short...I can't!!!! For a month, I have read and tried many, many things. I have watched just about every Youtube video there is on the subject...nothing. I did a Factory Reset thinking Windows 7 would restore because it came on the laptop. Windows 10 came back. I am just about at the point where I am going to give it back and tell her she may just have to learn it, unless someone knows a way that works!

You can order model specific Toshiba recovery discs from Toshiba or from another site for it. You can also use a regular Windows 7 disc and reinstall using the license key on the bottom of the laptop. But it would be advisable to learn Windows 10, it's not going anywhere whereas Windows 7 is dead in less than 2 years. There's not much to it, there's a Start Menu and you can search for most things using the Cortana search bar. Plenty of online tutorials that show how to use that she can watch. For most people they just pin the programs they use on the Taskbar, Start Menu, or the Desktop and that's all they'll ever need. Internet browsers work the same on Windows 10 as on Windows 7 and that's all that most people use, especially if she's now using an iPad.

Strongly agree with the above statement, but there is an easy way to keep & setup Win 10 to look & feel like Win 7. Most seniors prefer it. Have a look at Classic Shell here: http://classicshell.net/

It's easy to setup. And you will still retain the Win 10 GUI if needed. I do suggest doing so now & then to become comfortable with the Default. I use CS, & actually prefer it, but I am also quite comfortable & adept at using the Win 10 default.

There are plenty of YouTube videos you can view. Here are two:

Do not use Classic Shell on W10
Classic shell is no longer supported, maintained or updated. W10 updates so frequently that any changes will break classic shell & cause serious problems. It did work on W10 RTM but hasn't reliably worked since 1607, although it was updated to supposedly work on 1703.

If you really must use a 3rd party shell that looks like W7 then try stardock start 10 which is maintained/ updated continuously and hasn't been known to cause any problems with W10

I've been using Classic Shell since Win 8, & have been using it on Win 10 with no issues at all & neither have any others I personally know of. It has been rock solid on each version of Win 10. No updates to my current Win 10 ver 1803, or prior, has ever broken CS, nor to my many friends who run it. It's installed on 3 desktops & 2 laptops, all Win10 in my household. Granted there will always be someone out there that will experience an issue or conflict. As is also often the case with other software. Even when it's being actively supported. Regardless, until such time that Windows really does break CS or CS fails me or it breaks Win 10, it will remain installed. BTW it is my understanding that CS was handed over to Open Source. I will look into the latest info regarding such, time permitting.

Yes, StarDock Start 10 is a very good alternative. It also offers some features that CS doesn't have. It's a free 30 day trial, after which one can continue with it for a measly $5.00, or uninstall if not wanted. I have just one friend that uses it.

I'd be interested in some feedback here from others who no longer are or still continuing to use Classic Shell.

Just look at the classic shell forums for problems with any W10 version after 1607

I honestly cannot recommend it to anybody any longer. It is especially problematical if you run as a limited or normal user and not as admin.

Wow! Guys! Thanks so much for the input. I agree totally with the first post. We should BOTH learn the Win 10. We were both being lazy in not wanting to learn something new.

I believe someone else has taken over the development of Classic Shell and has given it another name.
I will try to find the articles that I read not too long ago.
