I woke up the other day to find my computer emailing 1000's of messages---not sure how many really. I have NSWP2007 and the e-mail scanner was backed up, and saying my email service was rejecting the e-mails. I pulled the lan cable out, and started to figure out what to do.

I ran NAV from NSWP2007, it found nothing of consequence, Spybot S&D-I deleted what it said was bad, Lavasoft Free Adaware-Scanner hit a particular file and computer rebooted 3 times for 3 attempts, each time about the same time frame, not sure what file it was, so I skipped the Adaware pgm for now.

Computer still slooooww, and sounds like "DING" were sounding like DA DA DA DA DING ING ING G G. Also getting Virtual Memory error messages about running out of memory, I have a P4 2.0-400 with 1.5Gig RAM installed and 41Gig free space on a 250Gig drive.

Since then I have run as many online virus scanners as I could find, Panda, CA, Trend Micro HouseCall, Kasperski, McAffe, and Bit Defender, and all came up with a few of the same "somethings" and a few unique "somethings". I deleted all the /windows/system virii, trojans, spyware, and tracking cookies detected, as well as the registry entries listed. No Love Yet!

I then pulled the drive and installed another clean drive and installed windows xp and ran the scans with the tainted drive installed in a USB enclosure. More virii and trojans were found and deleted

Maybe I deleted too much to figure the real villan, but now I just want to get back to normal. Maybe I have the scan reports for most of the OL Scanners, are the needed/helpful?

I have a HJT log, Is there any hope for my computer??
Thanks in advance,
John

I don't see anything that shold not be there unless something has renamed its-self to one of these normal looking entries

Also, Is there any part of this log that can be cut away in the future? -PersonalPetPeeve about extra long useless info. Thanks again....

Hello DVK01,
Thanks for the reply.

I did not reinstall windows on the infected drive, I used a different drive

I then pulled the drive and installed ANOTHER clean drive and installed windows xp and ran the scans with the tainted drive installed in a USB enclosure. More virii and trojans were found and deleted

The tainted drive is currently reinstalled and the dings are still going dadadading and the ticks are going t t t tick.

I ran a Winbench 99 benchmark test on the tainted drive and found the entire test suite to be 40% or more, slower than when I ran the test 6 months ago on the same drive/configuration.

Is there any help for me?
Thanks,
John

Sorry I misread your original

lets see if this will show anything

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: especially follow the advice about installing the recovery console

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply

After looiing these logs over I am seeing the yeyqase entry, I don't remember ever seeing this before. What do you think?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet002\Services\yeyqase]
"ImagePath"="\??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\ras\yeyqase.mis".
Thanks in advance,
John

download the attached CFScript.txt and save it to your desktop ( click on the link underneath this post & if you are using internet explorer when the "File download" pop up comes press SAVE and choose desktop in the list of selections in that window & press save)

Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before going any further

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Remember to reconnect to the net and enable any disabled antivirus etc BEFORE reconnecting

Note: these instructions and script were created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these instructions or use this script as it could damage the workings of your system.

This will create a zip file named something like [38][email protected]

at the end it will pop up an alert & open your browser and ask you to send the zip file

please follow those instructions. We need to see the zip file before we can carry on with the fix

If there is no pop up alert or open browser then

please go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?board=1.0 and upload these files so I can examine them and if needed distribute them to antivirus companies.
Just press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to your post here & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the files on your computer, If there is more than 1 file then press the more attachments button for each extra file and browse and select etc and then when all the files are listed in the windows press send to upload the files ( do not post HJT logs there as they will not get dealt with)

Files to submit:
the zip file on desktop created by combofix named something like [38][email protected]

Hello DVK01,
Thanks for your continued assistance.

The script file was run and the file it generated was sent as requested.

Your file was successfully submitted. Please let the user helping you know that you have submitted the file.
I took a peek at the script and generated files. The "Yard11 and TBC156" were DVD Rips, and one of the Uninst entries was for Spybot S&D.

I dont know what the other Uninst or the YEYQASE entry is for. I browsed to the win/sys32/ras folder and the yayqase file is gone.

I have not tried to reboot yet as I am waiting to be sure now is the time to do so, by your request.

Thanks again,
John

for some reason it didn't delete the drivers that concerned us

download gmer rootkit detector from http://gmer.net

unzip it & double click the gmer.exe file

select rootkit tab & press scan

when it has finished press copy & post back the log it makes

What drivers are you looking to delete? Can I delete them manually?
I can goto safe mode, delete them, then run NSWP 2007 "WinDoctor" to clean the registry.
Would that work?

I'll do the reboot, then the GEMR.

Thanks for your continued attention,
John

I rebooted, unzipped, and ran the GEMR program......It crashed with a screen full of data that I could not save.

I rebooted again and ran the program without the UNZIP part and only 1 section at a time, expecting 1 section to crash again......It did not crash for any single test. I have the results for the individual tests, but they won't fit into the 30,000 character allocation for this message so I will have to attach them, below?

I then ran the test a 3rd time with all selections selected and it did complete again, but with very few entries saved. Here is that listing......

GMER 1.0.14.14205 - http://www.gmer.net

I don't understand the greatly differing results, but here they all are.

Hopefully you can make heads or tails of them.

Thanks,

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results"
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Back in the W98 days, the system could generate a bootlog WITH time stamps for each process. Now WXP can genetate the boot log but WITHOUT the time stamps. Is there a current logging method of the boot process that DOES generate time stamps?

Thanks again for all your efforts,
John
