Is it possible to write a simple program that will turn on a computer, run system scans, and shut down at a certain time each day? If possible, what programming language would be most appropriate to use?
I realize there is already software out there you can buy that does this, however, I would like to explore programming in a valuable way, and at the same time save money.

Hi,

Well you can certainly find a command to turn a PC off,
but a command to turn it on pre-supposes certain conditions.

A command to turn a PC on, would only work if the PC wasn't really
fully 'off' merely asleep, or dormant, but still ticking over.

I have noticed with the machine i am using now (Dell-XPS) that after
going through the shutdown routine, that if i don't actually switch
off the power, the screen instruction 'You may turn your PC off now'
remains displayed,
and if i then press 'Cntl, Alt, Delete' the machine will start up
again.

So there is something within the machine that is still aware,
and can also 'kick' it back into booting.

I do not think this something is part of the Windows OS cos
thats all shut down beforehand.
But excactly what it is, i dont know.
Maybe part of the bios stays energised - i dunno.

If its the bios, then maybe it could be set to start at intervals,
once running, other programmes could perform tricks as required.

I'm surprised others haven't come in on this thread.
Best of luck with it, John :)

The only way you could have a script turn it on is if your BIOS and NIC support "Wake on LAN" and you had another computer on the network to "wake it up" from.

Thanks guys...is there any way I can transfer this thread to the "Programming" forum? If there isn't could a moderator move it for me?

So, I now know that I can turn it off. What programming language should I use for this code?
The problem of turning it on still remains...I will need to do my homework on that.

You don't need to write it yourself, Windows Task Scheduler will do all this except turn the computer on.
