Ok, come to my surprise, my friend gives me a G4 iBook that has a boot error. He goes to start it up and it goes to a black screen with a blinking line. I'm thinking like DOS. But he doesn't know how to fix it. I'm more familiar with Windows that Mac so is this just a format and reinstall OS 10? Thanks.

if you need the data, boot from OS X install discs (either a retail Copy of Tiger, or the original install discs) and choose "Archive and install." once done installing, copy the user data off of it, through the Network, or on a Removable Media device, or if you have a CD/DVD Burner, you can do that.

You are pretty much seeing the backgrounds of the OS. Not sure which mode it is booting into, it could be Verbose, or Single User, but you system is pretty much hosed unless you want to do some advanced trouble shooting and delve into Unix. Anyway, a reinstall is probably what you need.

    Cheers!
