icon in taskbar

    Hi, new to the forum and also Win XP Home only had new system since Christmas was on Win ME before, I have an icon of 2 small monitors with a red cross in my taskbar the message when I run mouse over is 'Local Area Connection' a network cable is unplugged, no idea what this icon is for or if it's needed in taskbar, any help would be appreciated :)

    system:
    hp pavilion a708.uk Intel Celeron D330
    256 mb ram
    Win xp home
    80gig hdd
    dvdr/cdr combo drive

    This means your computer has a network card but you do not have a network cable plugged into it. It's normal to have the icon there. It's not using any system resources.

    Thank you for you reply, just starting to get to grips with XP, finding new things to worry about all the time one less now.

    you could disable the icon so it wont show. go to your network connections folder. right click on local area connection and select disable. the icon in the task bar next to the clock will disappear.

    Most likely your new system has an onboard network card. Unless you are connecting to the internet via cable or maybe DSL/ASDL, then I would also disable it like jd has suggested.
