    Is it ok to attach a DVD drive and a hard drive to the same IDE cable? I don't want to try it because I have had people tell me it's notta good.

    Not a problem. It used to be a significant issue when the drives were really slow. It is better to keep them on separate cables, because obviously when the DVD is transferring data at 33mhz, the disk is waiting. OTOH, as a rule, the DVD will be a pretty low volume device most of the time and not pose much interference.
