I mistakenly opened an unsolicited e-mail message, and now my startup page has been hijacked. I tried changing it in Internet Options, but as soon as I restart my PC, the unwanted startup page appears whenever I open Internet Explorer.

Any advice on removing this would be appreciated.

I'd be willing to edit the registry if necessary.

    Please Download hijackthis

    http://tomcoyote.org/hjt

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

After the scan has finished the "scan" button will turn into a "save log" button

save the log file and paste it here

    O4 - Global Startup: start.exe

    Shutdown & Reboot your computer

Run a Search for ( Start , Find , Files or Folders ) start.exe , and rename it start.old , and Reboot , That one is a bit of a mystery at the moment.

The following link can assist you in optimizing your start-up applications www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

Next , download and install Spybot search & destroy www.security.kolla.de Open Spybot search & destroy , Click Online , Search for updates , Download all available updates , log offline , Close all browser windows , check your taskbar for minimized windows as well , Run Spybot search & destroy , put a check in every entry Spybot search & destroy returns , Click fix problems. Shutdown & Reboot your computer

Consider installing SpywareBlaster v2.6.1 and SpywareGuard v2.2 for the prevention of both Spyware Active X installation and running , and Browser Hijacking protection in real-time http://www.wilderssecurity.net/index.html

    Good luck

I ran the Hijack program and checked the entires you recommended. It seems to do the trick. When I open IE after rebooting, I get my desired home page. It works after trying it several times to be sure. I searched for 'start.exe', but it doesn't seem to exist anymore. I checked MSconfig, and the 'start' entry isn't there anymore either under start-up items as it was when I was having the problem.

I'll try spybot and see if anything else surfaces.

    Thanks for your help!
