I'm having problems with IE 6 crashing; it says it has encountered an error and will close. It does this every time I close one window in IE, and at other times as well. I am pretty sure it is not related to spyware or viruses, since I just did a clean install of Windows 2000 pro and experienced the same problem immediately again. I have posted the problems in 2 forums and received no suggestions so far.

I tried iefix and that did not help.
I also tried repairing it and that did not work either.

So I uninstalled IE 6.0 but it does not completely uninstall it; I still have IE but it's version 5 and it does the same thing, except that it says "iexplore.exe has generated errors and will close. An error log is being generated."

It doesn't tell me how to view the error logs, so I haven't looked yet.

With any buggy IE issues, this is always worth trying.

Go into Internet Options, then into the Advanced tab, UNCHECK 'enable 3rd party browser extensions', then RESTART your PC, and try again.

I went to the microsoft link Blues posted, and after reading that, tried to start in safe mode and found that IE does not crash in safe mode, which means it is another program

Finding out that it is another program is even more confusing to me, since this happened after a clean install and the only programs installed were the ones that Windows 2000 pro installs and a couple necessary to access the internet, because I could not get my Compaq Restore CD to work.

So as far as I know that would narrow the program down to something associated with NetZero or the 3com drivers for my modem unless there is something I've overlooked. I know that I have this problem when I use AOL too, so that makes me more suspicious of the modem software, however I have updated it to the newest drivers before and this did not solve the problem.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I have also seen an error "3cmlnkw.exe has encountered errors and will be shut down" and when I looked in my processes tab under task manager I saw there were 2 copies of 3cmlnk.exe running. I even tried another modem from another computer, which is almost new, with the drivers that came with it
and still had problems. So I would find it hard to believe that 2 different 3com modems and installation CDs would both cause problems with Windows2000.

What should I do to troubleshoot which program is causing errors?

Hi 3cmlnkw.exe as you may know is a support file associated with 56k modems.
Post a Hijack this log..link below.
This will show all that is running on your system.
Save to c:/ program file...so a back up can be made.
Close all windows..open Hjt log..click scan and save logfile.
It will open in notepad..click edit>select all>edit>copy>back to your thread>paste on your thread.
A log expert will check it.

Here's the log. I hope it is useful. I noticed that I did not get the IE error after I uninstalled NetZero; however when I attempted to use AOL instead it only ran once succesfully and then started generating errors, and a reboot did not help.

I haven't installed an antivirus program since the clean install. I'm going to download AVG.
