My Internet Explorer browser has mysteriously developed a 'NOT RESPONDING' message when I access certain web sites. I went to the windows update, and to the internet explorer update sites to see if they had an update that would make this problem go away; they didn't though. I always run spybot S&D and AdAware SE and have NIS 2004. Can anyone help? The 'NOT RESPONDING' message appears in IE's Title Bar (I think) -- the blue bar at the top of the browser.

Go to All Net Tools at: http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox
type in SmartWhois (for example): forums.techguy.org
which reveals the IP address: 24.137.12.228

Open a command window in XP: Start->Run->cmd->ok
type in: ping forums.techguy.org
or ping 24.137.12.228

If you get packet loss, the website may well be down, or it may be saturated, i.e. all of its connections are used up and it is very busy.
Try again later.

Conversely, what I do on occasion when attempting to visit a website and the response I get is that my ISP is either Looking up the website's IP address in the DNS server, or Connecting takes too long - I will disconnect and reconnect my dial-up connection. That may or may not work depending on the Internet load upon my ISP servers.

Its the website that is 'Not Responding', not IE.

P.S. I recommend use of IE only for Windows Updates or where required to access a website, and otherwise use Firefox v1.0.5 just out for better security and performance (w/FireTune).

PRIOR TO my promise to myself never to ues that leaky thing MICROSOFT calls I.E.,I had 2 problems with it.My FAVORITES LIST got screwed up,and I'd have to retype the corect IP into the address bar,and reenter the web site into the favorites list.
The other I did myself, some how I put a couple of sites into lists that blocked them.
NOW that your lucky enough to have EXPLORER break, just install a good browser----AVANT or FIREFOX or both.

SURFF SAFE !!!!!

Also look at Mozilla 1.7.6 or higher. It is a 'suite' the includes browser,mail/newsgroups, and an html composer. It is real neat, since you can switch between the three by clicking on the alternative you want. Unfortunately, the menu is under the word "windows" on the menu bar. They should have been more creative!

I wouldn't be without Moz. I "tear apart" web pages using File>Edit page, then select and copy. Then use the composer, which is automatically activated when you click "Edit page" to create a file for saving to my own My Docs, etc. by pasting to the blank page that appears when you click "new."
