Please download HJT again and place it in a permanent folder
    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HijackThis.exe

Manually create a new folder, eg. C:\Program Files\HijackThis\
and download HijackThis.exe straight to that folder.
Note, this is the newly released HJT v1.99.1

    Open the new HijackThis.exe

    Close all browser/email/explorer windows

    Run HJT scan again
Place a checkmark next to the following entries only
    and click "Fix Checked"

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm

Thank you so much for your fast reply.

Here's where I am so far... I have reinstalled HJT in a folder on my "C" drive and done the scan again. I have removed the entries you specified. I have gone into the control panel and removed the entries you specified there.

    However

I have not been able to get my PC to boot in safe mode.

I tried rebooting and using the F8 method, but I dont have safe mode as a choice. I followed the tutorial (from symantec) that was attached to your response, and did the:

    Start--->Run--->msconfig---Ok

and I get an error message asking me to check the spelling ???

Help... looks like I'm stuck again. I dont remember EVER booting this machine in safe mode...

Thanks again so much for the help... I really appreciate your time :)

I dont mean to be impatient, but without the ability to boot in safe mode, I'm not too sure what I should be doing next here
