I have windows 98, and when I try to start my computer, a message pops up and says "This computer has performed an ileegal operation and will be shut down" I have the option to close the message or click on details. Of course the details make no sense to me. When I close the message my screen stays blank. I can move my mouse but nothing ever happens. What did I do wrong? Can it be fixed?

try posting more of the message, the details may make sense to someone here or provide something to do a search on

Yes, there's a details button in your error message. Click that, and tell us what it says.
You can leave all the numbers, registers, and stacks alone.
The only thing we'd like to hear is something sounding like 'Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL', or something similar.

Okay, the message says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" not "this computer", sorry.
The details says "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:0080fed8" Is that what you need?

At Microsoft support you can download a *regcleaner* file that will clean up your registration folder.
when you put programs in and them take them out you still have files left in your registration folder. This program will restore you Registration folder. The download is free

RegCleaner does locate and remove 'orphaned' registry keys, and it does lots more as well, but unfortunately it isn't able to prevent you getting invalid page faults.

That would make it very popular indeed... :)

Please start by telling us what programs load when Windows starts up:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Running Tasks.
Now click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'

Paste the contents in your post.

Good luck,
