I and some other online friends use themes made for pcw. We would like to share a theme amoung the 5 of us that one of our friends has edited... But he was just going to make it downloadable on his website for us.. But the problem is a guy has told us we can't because in the original nfo in the packages it stated Re-distribution/replication of this theme is strictly prohibited, whilst permission is granted for reasonable modification of the theme for personal, non-profit use. But none of us are using it for profit! So would we be breaking an actual law by sharing it with each other?

Not sure what pcw is, some sort of blogger?

Did your friend purchase this theme or did he download it from somewhere for free?

The redistribution of "themes" is usually protected under the free software or GPU foundation, you can read their rules here:
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

Basically, it mostly covers the mass use of it for your own blog software without the expressed written permission of the owner. The theme, if edited can be redistributed, but not under the themes name. Copyrights can not be removed, altered to make it appear clear or blended into backgrounds no matter how much you change the theme. Copied areas must include credited names for the original code it is copied from.

Ask the "guy" who created the theme if it's allowable, he will most likely say yes if the themes credits are intact.

IT IS a way to display php code easily and simple for the lamen.. This is just over a edited theme.... He changes more than half of it,, It states in the text file that came with it. That redistrubution of it was not allowed, but editing for individual need for non profit use was fine...

I assume there is also an email or website for him/her in the licence?
If in doubt email the originator and ask him/her for the permission to redistirbute the code.

No one can say either way for sure here unless they know the code original download source, type of "software" or "script" that is encompasses and can read the liscence.
