Please note:- As of the 11th July, the Murga-Linux Puppy Forum is no longer accessible.

- John de Murga, the founder & host of the Puppy Linux Discussion Forums, passed away in his sleep back on the 22nd May this year. Not Covid-19 related, he died from an "ischaemic episode".....translation; a heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, daughter, and two very young twins who came into the world approx 10 days after their papa left it.

The community knew nothing about this until the Forum went into automatic "maintenance mode" on the afternoon of Saturday 16th July, around 2.30 pm GMT. John's Forum 'visitations' were always few & far apart, and we would often not hear from him for years at a time, except for announcements about maintenance or hardware upgrades and the like.

Barry Kauler, Puppy's founding author, and one of our community members who is prominent on the PuppyLinux user's Facebook page, have both been in touch with a close family member. The family had been in Singapore for the last few years; John was a programmer/analyst in the banking sector, and had co-authored some of the sector's key-stone software, many years ago, which is still in general use today.

His wife, it seems, wishes to obtain 'power of attorney' over her husband's estate, with the object of better directing the winding-up of his affairs. As part of this, she would like to restore the old Murga-Linux forums to at least read-only condition, as an archival testament to her late husband's 'on-line prescence'. It may, perhaps, return to full read/write condition. We don't yet know; the family needs to be allowed as long it takes to grieve for their loss.

With the loss of the old Forum, the community has lost access to more than 15 years of contributions; a huge blow, in so many respects.

Barry, and Michael "Mick" Amadio - 01Micko on the Forum - Puppy's current 'steward' after Barry stepped-down a few years ago, have both posted about this on their respective blogs:-

There is some good news, however.

To address the long-standing issue of new members not receiving e-mail confirmation links - almost certainly due to the old Forum's antique "http-only" status - a "test" Forum was set-up by one of our members, Rockedge, in November last year. Rockedge runs his own servers for various projects, so has plenty of experience with what is needed to set-up & maintain a busy forum.

Within hours of the old Forum's demise, a slow but steady trickle of community members began to find their way across. This is, to all intents and purposes, the new Puppy Forum; if it should prove possible to obtain an SQL database "dump" of the old Forum's databses, the eventual intention is to merge this with the new Forum.

We're talking here about well over a million posts, so there's an awful lot of content to restore!

For anybody who's interested, you can find the new Puppy Linux Discussion Forum at the following URL:-

I'm posting this same information on all fora to which I belong, so as to alert as many Puppy users as I can. Hope to see you over there, Puppians old and new..!

Mike. ;)

Thanks Mike.

My condolences to the de Murga family.

His influence is and will be, missed.
I've searched his site for solutions in the past and hope that all can be salvaged and incorporated into the new forum.
It was an incredible treasure trove of Puppy information and ideas.

The best of luck to Rockedge.

I've helped rescue many systems and user data with Puppy. Sad heart goes out to his family.

Now then, boys & girls; some updates for you.

As of this moment, the original set-up has been accessed by James Budiono (jamesbond of FatDog64 fame). The whole thing, it appears, is running on a Linode VPS, and has been for several years.

BarryK was finally able to persuade Linode of his credentials, and they allowed him to have John's log-in information. Following this, James has now locked the old forum to all further posting, essentially turning it into a giant Puppy reference library. The SQL database has been dumped, and we have at least three separate copies of the entire thing, securely stored in 3 different locations.

So; the last 15 years content is now secure.

It's been decided to maintain the "old" server as-is, although technically it's only the phpBB forum software that's old. New forum Admin rockedge has come to the conclusion that the planned merger of the two is not going to be as simple as hoped for, and that an attempt to do so could result in the loss of everything the community has,'s been decided to maintain the "Murga" VPS as-is with Linode.

The two servers being physically located on different continents, on opposite sides of the world, doesn't help.

John was on a $5-a month plan with Linode; James has paid for a further year's hosting up-front. Some of us in the community are helping with reimbursement; we don't feel James should have to find it all.

BarryK is currently negotiating with, the holders of the domain name, for title to it. In case this falls through, as a back-up plan, domain names for the two fora have been changed & "aggregated".

The main forum, now resolves to

The "archive", now resolves to

The main Puppy search engine, also maintained by rockedge, has been re-set to point to both domains using the new DNS resolutions.

Over the last few days, many of the original links from "official" Puppy documentation have now been changed to re-direct to the new domains.

So; hopefully (!!) everything is now secure for the future....
