Announcement of The Forum Infraction System:

As some of you have noticed, we have been working on using a new infraction system in the forums for rule violations. We have been using it for several weeks now, before we made an official announcement to make sure this is a system we felt comfortable with and that we felt would work for us. We believe we've got most of the system customized now to work with TSG and are satisfied with how it is working and are now making the official announcement to let you, the membership, be aware of the change in how we will be dealing with rule violations.

The rules page has been changed to reflect this.

Infractions are points given to members for conduct and postings that are in violation of TSG’s Rules and Terms of Service. When an infraction is applied to an account, it will add a point(s) to the account, the exact number of which will depend on the seriousness of the infraction and staff discretion. Some points will eventually expire; some will remain forever, again, depending on the seriousness of the infraction. When an account receives three points, a temporary ban of one day will automatically be imposed by the system. When an account reaches five points, the temporary ban is three days. When an account reaches seven points, the ban is for seven days. When an account reaches nine points, the ban becomes permanent.

If you should receive an infraction or a warning (warnings do not carry any points, but will help the staff be aware of previous offenses) you will see a yellow notice of it on the right upper corner of your posts and in your profile page. However, ONLY you and the staff can see this. You are able to see it so there is no confusion on anyone's part, yours or the staff's, as to the amount of times there have been rule violations and how close you are to a ban or a time-out. In the past, there have been times when members have complained of being "unaware" of how much trouble they are in or how close they are to the edge........we hope this will eliminate that. Once a member has a certain amount of points, the ban is automatically applied by the system. Each member will be aware of where they are in regards to this, and can moderate their behavior accordingly. ;)

While the system has a number of preset infractions and warnings, in order not to remove the "personal" part of TSG, there is still the ability for moderators to customize them and, of course, the moderators will still, as they have always done, look at each case individually and base their decision and actions on the situation. :)

As with most things, the Community forums will have a bit more leeway and a bit more individuality in what actually constitutes a problem serious enough to warrant a formal warning or infraction. Also, as always, any member is welcome to contact an Administrator (by PM or email.....NOT in the public forums) to politely contest the warning/infraction if they desire. Any contesting of a formal warning/infraction will be reviewed by the Administrators and that decision will be final.

    Signature Limitations:

Due to past abuse of the member signature option and in order to keep a clean experience without too much distraction, Tech Support Guy will be implementing new restrictions on the use of member signatures effective today. These restrictions will be:

    - Limit to 3 lines including blank lines
    - Limit to size 3 font
    - Quote/code boxes will be disabled (though you may use the quote symbols).

Please take a moment to update your signature by clicking on My Account at the top of any page and then Edit Signature on the left. (Or just click here for a shortcut.)

All members will have 30 days to bring their signatures into compliance. After July 10th, Administrators will remove signatures that don't meet these new standards as we become aware of them.

Thanks very much for your cooperation and understanding!

    Notice Concerning "Run-on" Threads:

From this point forth, to keep this "Announcements" forum restricted to actual announcements, any thread that becomes over extended and off-topic and becomes a random discussion will be moved to the Random forum.

    Thank you for your understanding.

This also applies to the "Introduction" sub-forum and especially to the "Site Comments & Suggestions" sub-forum, which is to discuss and inform the staff of any queries or issues pertaining to the site itself. Site Comments & Suggestions is, technically, a technical sub-forum dealing with the site and should be treated the same way as the other tech sub-forums.

    Old Threads are Automatically Closed:

We've had a problem with new users replying to very old threads (sometimes from years ago). Often they're having a similar problem, but sometimes they're not. In either case, it adds confusion to post a "me too" to a thread that died a long time ago. As a result, I've just written a program that will basically close any thread that hasn't received a reply for 45 days.

It works like this: If a particular thread hasn't received any replies in 45 days, it will be "closed" and will not accept any new replies. We've made an exception for all Community forums (like Random and Civilized Debate) so that threads in those forums will not automatically be closed. If there's some reason you want to re-open a thread that's been closed, you will be given a link to ask a Moderator to re-open it for you.

We hope that this new policy will help reduce some work for our very busy Moderators and also help prevent confusion from misplaced replies. Feel free to reply back or contact me directly if you have any questions. Thanks!

Tech Support Guy Library – Wiki:

The Tech Support Guy Library (http://library.techguy.org/) is now available for all users of Tech Support Guy. It is a wiki, which means that anyone can edit any page. Please take some time to check it out and, when possible, add some new information! If you have any problems using the site, please PM or email me ([email protected]).

It's my hope that the Library will become a source of common solutions that we can point users to when appropriate. I hope you find it useful and help us to get it off the ground. :)

Also, a huge thanks to those Library Catalysts (including StuartM, Gizzy, and Ferrija1) for helping us get things started already.
