I have a HP Pavilion G4 notebook running on Windows 7.

There are times that I have sound and times that I don't have any sound. From all sources... i,e. Internet, Media player, etc.

I found that I get a temporary fix by right clicking on the the speaker icon in the system tray and I select PLAYBACK DEVICES, then i right click SPEAKERS AND HEADPHONES, then select TEST. After "Test" i refresh the web page or media player that i'm using and it works. But like i said this is temporary. If i open another page or close it and comeback, i have to do the same thing. Same goes for the media players.

There are no warning icons in the device manager Sound/speaker section.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum

    WHICH Pavillion G4?
Look on the bottom of the lappy for a mailing label sized label / sticker.

The next time you lose speaker audio, connect [ I suggest hainvg headphones constantly attached during the diagnostic & test phases ] the headphones. Is audio present?

When did the problem begin? Sometimes the exact date is important.

What changed? A program or hardware [ printer, other peripheral ] install or removal? An update to W7 [ check the updae history ] or another program?

Device manager only comments on drivers. The statement that "this device is working properly" is misleading. The truth is that said verbage means ONLY that Windows likes teh driver. I can install a driver, without a physical device present and Windows will happily report the same, if W7 likes the driver.

Please run this forum's sys info tool & post the results in this thread.

Is the computer in normal mode or other?

There is audio present when headphones are connected.

This is my girlfriends computer, yes "oh no!" lol. And she has no idea when exactly this problem began, All i know is that it's been like this for a couple of months.

I followed your instructions and the Normal Startup selection.

How often does the issue occur?

The problem could be caused by defective hardware [ speaker, wire to speaker, electronics controlling audio output ] software [ file within W7 or program interfering ].

    Left click "start"
left click "programs" or "all programs"
    create a screen shot
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Use-Snipping-Tool-to-capture-screen-shots

    post it in a reply
    "go advanced"
    "manage attachments"
    browse to the screen shot
    upload
    close window
    submit reply

Also, create a screen shot of Device Manager's "sound, video & game controllers"
after enabling view's "show hidden devices"
