Hello!! This seems to be the best place to find out some answers! A few weeks ago, I had a nasty virus on my computer. Luckily I had internet on my phone and was able to look up how to remove the virus and thought the problem was taken care of. Over the last week or so my computer has slowed to turtle speed, when I click on any program to open it, I can walk away and do something else for 10 mins or so as that is how long it takes to open. I have run MalwareBytes as well as my Antivirus program(norton security suite) and they have found nothing. Granted I have only been able to do a quick scan for av, I tried a full scan and it took 6 days to go through 170,000+ files and wasn't even close to done. So I'm not sure if the virus wasn't fully removed, as I thought, or if this is a ripple effect from having a virus.

And now, upon restarting my computer this morning, it told me that it found new hardware, unknown, that needed to be installed. One of my drivers just disappeared it seems. I'm not sure how, why or what caused this but is there a way to fix it?

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1500MHz, x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 575 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 38154 MB, Free - 16236 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P4B-LA
Antivirus: Norton Security Suite, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

I have to go run an errand quick but will back in about a half hour to an hour to respond!

TIA for any help or answers you can give me :)

Hi TLo2862 and welcome.
If you can post a Hjt log.
Hijack this 2.04
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also post the Uninstall Log.
Start HijackThis.
At the bottom right hand corner>under Others stuff.
Click on Config.
Then Misc Tools.
Then Uninstall Manager.
Save List>paste the list in your next post.

sorry that took me a while. Like I said it takes my computer forever to open things and to run scans. I should also note that I used super antispyware, which is what found the trojans and that is what removed them. But I have to remove that from my computer any time I use it b/c it slows my computer way down as well. But normally that solves the problem...except this time :/

I will ask a Trusted Advisor to check your log and help you clean your system.
Meanwhile.
Check Device Manager
Click Start button>run>type
devmgmt.msc

Check for any yellow exclamation marks.

RAM: 575 Mb - is about the minimum you want to run Xp and if you use it for games ect it will run slow.

#7 ·
Thanks! I don't use it for gaming. It's mainly used for job hunting, networking with people in my field and general internet stuff. I ran the Device Manager. I didn't have any yellow exlamation marks, but there was a yellow question mark under other devices and it was listed as unknown device.

If your computer specifications:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1500MHz, x86 Family 15 Model 0 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 575 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, 256 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 38154 MB, Free - 16284 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P4B-LA
Antivirus: Norton Security Suite, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

are correct and current, let's discuss that first.

The ASUS P4B-LA motherboard has 3 slots and supports a maximum of 3072 MB(3 GB) of 168-pin PC133 SDRAM - 1024 MB(1 GB) in each slot.

I'm not sure how many modules and what capacity you currently have installed in that computer, but my advice is to install a 512 MB module in all 3 slots.

Besides the fact that you're using memory-hungry programs(Adobe Photoshop, Norton Security Suite) in that computer, programs and websites and computing functions have gotten more and more memory-hungry over the years and need more RAM.

If you haven't already done it, complete the instructions in post #8.

If a massive amount of temp files need to be deleted, the computer may appear to "hang".

Be patient and wait for the deletion process to complete.

-------------------------------------------------------

Are you using a Dell printer or a HP printer or both printers with that computer?

-------------------------------------------------------

#11 ·
I believe there are 2 256 mb and one is 64. I will go out tomorrow and buy some new ones.

I will DL and update everything when I am done with this post. I will probably wait to install the SuperAntiSpyware until I install the new ram as that slows my computer down a ton when it's on my computer now.

I did complete the other step and deleted all the temp files that could be deleted.

I am using just the HP printer now, the Dell printer is no longer being used.

#12 ·
256 MB + 256 MB + 64 MB = 576 MB, so that would coincide with what you have listed in your computer specifications.

Look at the labels on the modules and see if they are ECC or non-ECC modules. You need to have one or the other and not mix ECC with non-ECC.

Once you have more RAM in that computer, you should see an obvious improvement in speed and snappiness - especially after we trim down that bloated startup load.

--------------------------------------------------

If you no longer have the Dell printer connected to and in use with that computer, you can uninstall/remove Dell AIO Printer A920

HP Software Update is unneeded and also can be uninstalled/removed.

OK, I have removed both of those. Unfortunately I need to order the RAM online. I went to a few Best Buys and Microcenter and no one seems to carry straight SDRAM anymore. And from what I understand, I can't use DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 correct? Unless anyone has another suggestion of where I could look before I order.

A computer that uses PC133 modules cannot use DDR or DDR2 or DDR3 modules.

Most computer stores don't sell PC133 modules because they're several years old in technology and don't have a profitable market.

There are several sites that do sell them though, such as

I stand corrected in what I said in the first part of post #10.
The ASUS P4B-LA motherboard supports 1536 MB(1.5 GB) and not 3072 MB(3 GB) of RAM.
I should've caught that discrepancy because PC133 modules don't come in anything larger than 512 MB.
Is by any chance your desktop a HP/Compaq model?
