Incredibly Slow computer

My comp has been incredibly slow for a while now. i thought it was an installed software's problem, but now i'm sure it's permanent, since the software was uninstalled. I own an HP 3200 AMD Athlon with 512MB Ram and it runs Windows XP Home edition. I have tried lots and lots of software like registry cleaners, I have zonealarm and norton with windows defender, and Malware Guard and have used CCleaner recently as well as Spybot S&D and ad-aware, and a-squared. But somehow, even after lots of bad files and viruses etc have been deleted my comp is still very very slow. Please Help.
Thank you!

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

PERFORMANCE QUESTIONS:

0 > when did the problem seem to be begin (and did ever you try doing a "System Restore" to a prior date)? [if you have done a lot of "virus cleaning" this might not be something to try now -- although they are undooable.]
1 > is it very slow to boot up?
2 > do programs open slowly?
3 > does the same behavior occur both on and off the internet. Or with no connection at all?
4 > does it matter how long the system has been on, and does a restart improve things?

Slow performance issues can often be due to overheating, so if the system is faster after it has been shutdown for a while and then restarted -- that would be especially suspect. To check for possible problems here, shutdown, open the case and blow out any accumulated dust. Then turn it
on and check to see that the fan is working. Sometimes it helps to physically clean the fan.

If a laptop, check to see that the vent is clear of dust and verify the fan is working. Temps and fan speed can usually be monitored with SpeedFan (except on Dell desktops), a free utility.

5 > if you do a ctrl-alt-del, do any processes show excess cpu usage, other than System Idle Process?

6 > If you open the Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc) and select the entry for IDE ATA/Atapi and select the Primary IDE > Advanced Settings, does it say the "current transfer mode" is Ultra DMA or PIO?

If it says PIO or even just DMA (rather than "ULTRA" DMA, first ensure "Use DMA if Available" is selected, then select the driver tab and uninstall the driver and reboot. Then check again.

*note that the above will not apply to RAID drive configurations.

0)This problem was not marked by any catastrophic event that I could see or anything noticeable at all. It was gradual I would say... Restoring to earlier times does not help anything.
1_ No (logging in is)
2. extremely slowly. now my days are...
-I wake up
-turn on computer
-wipe eyes
-log in
-brush teeth etc etc
- come back and wait for logging in
-open firefox (which has about 20 extensions. but even IE is still not as fast as I would like it to be)
-then wait about 20 seconds
3) indifferent
4) Unnoticable difference
5) vsmon.exe has 25
6) For some reason it says not applicable...

You *could* have a problem with insufficient ram to run or load everything you have going there.

The clue is that the "peak" usage equals your installed ram. Anytime your peak usage is within say 100 mb of installed ram -- Windows starts using the "virtual" memory (hard drive) instead of physical ram to conserve memory. This is much slower.

But the issue is primarily with logon.

There are a couple of troubleshooting excercises I would try here. One is "clean boot" starting and experimenting with more limited startup options. You would want to give priortity to testing your "security" software and reenable that as issues with it are subsequently ruled out.

Clean boot instructions below.

But the second excercise is to create a new User Account and see if the problem persists there.

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique XP

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in "selective" startup mode - you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

I've stopped most processes on my computer... now they won't turn on. I've opened System Config... and turned on select processes... but "An Access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log using an Admin account (I'm already on one) to make the specified changes"
But when I click select all under the Services tab then click apply, it does so without the error message.

I'm not sure what you are saying. I know the "access denied" message sometimes occurs with Symantec services. There may be an order in which you have to enable them.

You can try the procedure in Safe Mode using the built-in Admin account and see if that allows you to selectively troubleshoot.

You can also try skipping the Services profile at first, and just see if there is much to be gained by reducing the number of applications selected to startup under the "startup" group.

As for ram -- once Windows has locked up a certain amount relative to your available total -- every thing gets slower. The number of programs it is processing influences this.
