OK, I was given a computer recently and it's a Sony Vaio running XP, and there's something weird going on. Ok first off, I installed Spybot Search and Destroy, Avast, Ewido, Ad-Aware, AVG Free, Spywareblaster, and finally Firefox.

I got rid of TONS of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware and general nastiness, but some problems linger. For one, Spybot S&D tells me that I have Zwax on my system..and then goes on to tell me that it's clean. The others no longer come up with any malware.

Also, the Recyle bin in not functioning properly. For one, no matter how I set the views, the files which are sent there are never shown. And for some reason it insists that there are always five items in there no matter what(after emptying the bin).

    Here's the logfile:

A clean reinstall would be the best thing to do.

Ideally, you're right, but I don't want to do that unless it's a last resort.

    Download Registrar Lite from here:
    http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe
Save it to your desktop, double click on it and follow the setup wizard.
    Click on Continue with LITE.

Copy and paste the follow text into the address bar, then hit 'Go':
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units

In the pane on the right are the values associated with that key.

OK, I downloaded the program and deleted those keys.

About those trojans, only AVG dectected them and it won't quarantine or remove them. Nothing came up with Avast and the rest. Three of the dropper.generic.DZD trojans are in "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{47E7117B-18F3-4A10-B47C-105BED1BFF9B}\RP436\A0301367.exe"

    "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{47E7117B-18F3-4A10-B47C-105BED1BFF9B}\RP436\A0301368.exe"

    "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{47E7117B-18F3-4A10-B47C-105BED1BFF9B}\RP436\A0301369.exe"

and the last being: "D:System Volume Information\_restore{47E7117B-18F3-4A10-B47C-105BED1BFF9B}\RP438\A0301537.exe"

That did the trick I guess! Thank you! I really appreciate any time you guys and gals give.

Do you suggest any program that might protect against trojans specifically?

    You're welcome!!

You have two anti-virus programs running, which will cause trouble. Uninstall one or set it for on-demand only.

    Flush your System Restore:

    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    • Restart the computer.

To create a new restore point:
    • Start go to All Programs
    • Accessories, System Tools and select System Restore.
    • In the System Restore wizard, select "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
    • Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
    • Click Create and you're done.

Here are some additional links for you to check out!

I may be screwed now. I hope not. I flushed the system restore, but I have no system restore wizard. After restarting I selected system restore (by way of your instructions) and all it asked me is if I wanted to turn the system restore back on, and that's it.

Any ideas? Update: after trying for the fourth or fifth time, now I see the wizard. Will update further.

Update part deux: OK, created the restore point. Thanks. :) I gotta admit that I got a little panicked when it didn't want to work initially.

Ok, now as far as the two anti-virus programs, are you referring to Spybot Search and Destroy's real-time Tea-Timer protection vs the Avast real-time on-access scanner? I turned Avast off (it seems to have a mind of its own). Should I post another HJT logfile?

Avast4 and AVG were the two AV programs I was seeing.

    Spybot is anti-malware not anti-virus.

How's it running now? Any problems?
