Inspiron 1501 shutting down and freezing - black screen

My computer goes to a black screen even while I am working on it. Sometimes I can see the task bar, other times I can't. If I press the Power button, I can get the screen back and other times I can't so I have to power down by holding the Power button.

The system also shuts down on its own and then freezes on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen.

It is taking a long time for the computer to recognize anything I attach to the USB port.

Typing is very slow. I can type a URL and sit here and wait for the computer to finish my typing.

Windows was reinstalled, drivers updated; problem continues.

Any ideas what I can do?

I suggest you download HiJackThis v2.0.2, install the program. Open HJT and click the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. Copy the HJT logfile and paste it here in a post.

Do NOT fix anything. One or more of the TSG members will review the log and provide comments/actions. I am not qualified to provide analysis of the HJT logfile, but others are, so be patient and I'm sure one of them will get to it.

Joyce:

You may be having a hardware issue. It's kind of hard to tell without having a "hands on" with your computer.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Since there appears to be a problem with slowness and lag time, can you provide the specs on your computer?

Processor type and speed

Amount of RAM

Hard drive size and amount of free space

--------------------------------------------------------------

Let's disable a few startup entries that don't need to automatically load and run. I'm providing a link to them so you can see what they are.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup"(tab).

Remove the checkmark in:

ATICCC C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLIStart.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=ATICCC

Broadcom Wireless Manager UI C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=WLTray.exe

Device Detector DevDetect.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=DevDetect.exe

QuickTime Task C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=QTTask.exe

SigmatelSysTrayApp stsystra.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=stsystra.exe

SnagIt 8 C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 8\SnagIt32.exe

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=SnagIt32.exe (I've used it for years and I manually start it when needed)

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC, then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list clearly.

Highlight and double-click on:

Ati HotKey Poller

Change the setting from Automatic to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

Close the Services window, then restart.

When the small SCU window(see screenshot) appears on the desktop, put a checkmark in it, then click OK.
