What happens when you hook up the external monitor? So on the Inspiron screen can you see anything at all?

The Fn and arrow keys will control brightness on the laptop only, but you can try those. Is the external monitor getting a signal at all?

looks like the Fn arrow controls are all the way up, no change in the brightness.
the remote monitor power light comes off standby during startup but then goes back to standby mode (dull light) nothing but a black screen
    thankyou, jpass

Fn + F8 control the display options. Try pressing them to see if you get a signal to the external monitor. (Try them several times).

If on the laptop you can faintly see things then the problem will lie with the back light. If you don't see anything at all it could be the wiring/cable to the screen. These items are replaceable/fixable but I can't tell you how much it might cost. I'm sure someone will be able to give you an idea.
