Can I install office xp over office 2000 or is it necessary to uninstall office 2000 first? Thanks!

Their's no real reason, bsides in a development environment, to have multiple versions of Office running on your system.

It's recommended to Upgrade to the newer version,or uninstall the old one first, before installing the new one.

However, if you wish to use multiple versions, then take a look at OFFXP: Running Multiple Versions of Microsoft Office

I didn't mean to run both versions. I was wondering if installing office xp over office 2000 would automatically replace old files(upgrade automatically) instead of installing an additional version.

No, unless you have an upgrade version of Office XP, putting in a full version will not upgrade it.
