I am putting in a new processor in my desktop comp and I need some guidance.

    1. How do I remove the old processor/heatsink/fan?

    2. Can I use my old heatsink/fan with the new chip? (it can handle the new chip)

    3. Do I have to clean off the old compound from the heatsink/fan or can I leave it on?

Can someone give me step by step instructions on these questions. This is my first CPU replacement and I don't want to mess it up.

    My system:
ATHLON XP2000 1.6 Ghz. Want to replace it with a ATHLON XP2600+ 2.1Ghz.

    Thansk for your help.

Heatsink should be attached using clips, these will be a pain to unclip if it is the first attempt - basically 2 x clips on the outside - maybe use a screwdriver to push one side in and then release the other

As for the "gunk" this should be removed, maybe use a credit card - and replaced when installing processor
