Hi, so I have an Acer Aspire 3630.

The hard drive had been split into two partitions when I got it. One for personal data and one for the main OS.
I did a quick NTFS format of the OS partition, which was MBR entry 0, and then installed XP.

Now when XP loads it can be restarted and anything can be installed apart from drivers.

If I install any driver the operating system will hang on its next startup with the CPU usage being maxed out by the svchost process, sometimes this changes.

I'm not sure how to proceed, I've never come across this issue before.

The copy of XP I'm using is a genuine CD of service pack 2. If I install SP3 and then drivers/applications the same thing occurs.

Safe mode still worked and doing system restores to before the driver install would not fix the problem. However starting in diagnostic mode through msconfig did fix the issue.

EDIT: Just did a fresh install, installed one driver, same thing happened but system restore did revert it. Then on the second start-up after it hung again.

    Please can anyone help?

    And thanks for reading.
