Installing McAfee

I am running Windows7 on an HP Pavilion DV4. I am trying to install Mcafee protection software, and I get a message saying that I have to uninstall Norton 360 before I can install McAfee. When I try to do that in Control Panel, I get a message saying that I have to wait until the current program is uninstalled. My question: What "current program?" The only "current program" I'm trying to uninstall is Norton. Thanks.

Many members here recommend Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201 or http://www.avast.com/en-us/index both are free. ONLY USE ONE Anti-Virus program, having more than one will cause problems!

In conjunction with either of them use both of the following and run them at least once a week.
Malwarebytes
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
Superantispyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.
Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.
Make sure to uncheck or decline to use the "Pro" or "Trial" version, if it's offered.
After they're installed and updated, restart the computer.
Run a quick scan with each one.
After each quick scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING that was found.

I use Avast Free. I guess it all depends on which grading service you use. MSE is a good program and used by a lot of folks here; but it looks like it did not do well in the tests at AV. I use to use Norton until it took over my system resources and branched out into other fields of computer services. It got to be that Norton was in control of just about everything. Now, that's been many years ago; so I am not sure what it's like today; but I will stick with Avast Free for now as it, along with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware work for me just fine.

Thanks for that link stocker340.

Bear in mind that no single AV will catch everything. Security also involves common sense - knowing the sites to avoid and when NOT to click on a link. Find an AV that suits you - one that you can learn and understand easily. I've been using MSE for years with no problems. Norton have improved over the last couple of years but they are still resource hungry. MSE and Avast have a lighter footprint.
