i'm looking into getting a second 1TB hard drive specifically for games while my main one is used for my art programs. what i want to know is if i will need an OS on the second drive or if i can just put a "Games" folder there and install directly.

You don't need an OS on the new drive. If the games you install offer a choice of where to put their files then yes you can install onto the new drive.
