Hi peeps...am new around here and i must confess NICE WORK GUYS....Ok to my problem....am having an issue installing XP service pack 2, I keep getting an ACCESS DENIED error message.....I ve followed all the steps list here http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/454661-solved-xp-service-pack-2-a.html but am still stuck.....
i found the registry key and did the necessary tweaking as suggested in the info, but when i tried installing I still faced a similar problem....I saw some other error messages in the log file though
(#E065 Parsing AddReg section [Product.Add.Reg] in "c:\4c3d08a3e5b2a3373d4ef81354\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.
#E064 Parsing install section [ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install] in "c:\4c3d08a3e5b2a3373d4ef81354\i386\update\update.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied.)
Wouldnt know if this could have contributed too....pls assist

Are you using a real copy of Windows or a pirated one?

Well since you were asked about legal I will have you check for infections

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
    Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit Edit then Paste
You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

The answer to your question is yes.

Is that the ONLY "access is denied" error you are seeing in the log?

Run regedit and select (highlight) the Hkey_Classes_Root key.

    Select Edit > Find

COPY/PASTE (don't try to type) this into the find field:

    4c3d08a3e5b2a3373d4ef81354 and hit "find next"

Do you get a hit for it? If so, where? Hit F3 and see if there are any others.

We can't help you with a pirated copy. Is the Windows Genuine Advantage utility telling you it cannot validate your copy?

    You're fine then.

Tell me more about this registry entry:

3.Checking the Hkey_Classes_Root key for 4c3d08a3e5b2a3373d4ef81354, it appeared just once

    TYPE: RG_SZ
    DATA: WINDOWS SERVICE PACK SETUP

Right click on the key you find it in, and select "copy key name" and paste that here.

It appears to be for a temporary folder on the root drive that was not removed during the installation of a Windows update patch.

We may be able to rename or delete the folder or delete or alter the permissions of the registry entry.

I also need to know if you are getting any other "access is denied" errors other than for that.

If you say it validated your windows then try this and post back

Please download this from Microsoft and run it on your computer
    Filename = WGADiag2.exe
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
Press "Copy to clipboard" and post the results here

Basically what it does is not what you typed.

Sure there can be something done as soon as you get a legal version of Windows. OR

Microsoft did introduce a program where they would replace a pirated copy of XP if it was unknowingly acquired and you will find the details of that offer at this link. I think the best thing for the member to do is to contact Microsoft and they may be able to help the member out.
