I am going to exchange my old laptop with a new one.

My usage is for programming and Photoshop/Illustrator work.

I found that i5 processor fits my needs the best. But there seem to be some issues.

All the laptops that I checked with i5 were dual core and not quad core. Now even i3 provides dual core, so what benefit is i5 dual core providing me over i3 dual core.

On the intel website I checked that for laptops mostly i5 dual core processor is present.

The price difference between them is huge. Although I would like my machine to perform without lags, but I want to be sure that the processor is good enough for that and that I not just buying into the hype around the numbers.

Here are four models I narrowed down to:

    Intel Core i5 4210U (Dell Vostro 14 V3446 Notebook)
    Intel Core i5 3230M (Lenovo Essential G400s)
    Intel Core i5 3337U (Asus F550CC-CJ671H Notebook)
Intel Core i3 4005U (Dell Inspiron 3542 Notebook)
    Intel Core i3 4010U (Asus X Notebook)

Can anyone guide me here? Which processor or model is the best to have for my use?

Also any other models of processor that I should be looking into?

have a look here at the benchmark information for each of those processors
    you can compare upto 3
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

    goto search (find )
    on the page

here should be a link to 3 of those compared
But the link may not work from the site because of the [] so i have set up as text and you will need to copy and past

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2012&cmp[]=2259&cmp[]=1850

From your link I found that i5 3230m is the best performing with i5 4210u a close second.

Now the laptop with 3230m is $200 more than the one with 4210u. But their performance difference is marginal. Which one do you think I should go with?

Also what will be the difference in having Intel HD Graphics 4400 against 2Gb NVIDIA GT 720M?

    Thanks!

Theres also a Video Card comparison

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2643&cmp[]=2529

But, you may need someone with more graphics knowledge to comment - as that $200 seems a lot for the performance improvement
    what about other thinks- Like
HDD - size and if one also has a SSD
    RAM ?
    USB 3 ?
    Number of USB slots ?
