Intel Storage Driver makes Windows restart or shut down

    Whenever I try to do a virus scan my computer reboots. I get the following message when I come back up:

    ''Windows has recovered from a serious error''

    Problem caused by Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys)

    The problem was caused by Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys). Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys) was created by Intel Corporation. This product is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

    For more information about Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys), go online to the Intel Corporation website.

    If you are unable to fix this problem and continue to receive errors, you can also remove Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys).''


    When i put on Speedfan while doing a virus or spyware scan, i get the message that my CPU is overheated. My normal temp is 29/30 degrees, but when the scan starts it goes up to 35/36 degrees and suddenly my computer restarts. System temp is 30 and is not causing problems.

    I tried to put a big fan in my computer so the air flow is cool enough but it wont stop the problem. What should i do: more fans? I can't imagine it will stop the problem. How is it possible that my CPU is overheating and my system isn't?
    Change my hard drive? Speedfan online analysis is saying my hard drive is doing ok. One question: is Intel Storage Driver something i can remove as a program or is it hardware that i need to remove by hand? As you might have noticed: i'm a newbee in this category ;)

    Also when i play an online game, my comp gets a frozen screen sometimes so i have to switch off the power. Since i've put the ''safe energy'' mode off and use the power as normal it seems that i'm not having this frozen screen problem anymore.

    So my main problem: Intel Storage Driver and overheating and Windows that is automatically rebooting. Any suggestions?

    1. Check the heatsink that is attached to the processor, is it attached firmly?, is the fan on the heatsink working?

    Please post the exact model of PC you are working on.

    the heat sink is the big metal plate box in the middle i assume with a fan attached to it? fan is working correctly. I'm not sure which of all those objects is the processor really. maybe i should post a photo of my computer from inside.

    Yes, so long as the heatsink is firmly attached to the processor, which is under it and cannot be seen.

    That info you posted is of no help to me, I need to know if it is a home built PC or a Dell, HP, ect

    If it is home built, I need to know the model and revision of the motherboard, usually printed on the motherboard.

    If it is store bought Dell, HP ect, I need the specific Model Number.

    The message you are getting may be caused by bad sectors in your hard drive.

    Go to your drive manufacturers site, and download and run their diagnostic utility. If they have an option for a short test, or extended test, use the extended test.

    I cannot find a diagnosctic utility on the Aopen website neither on the Intel website, but maybe i just dont know where to look for it. However, the automatic message i got from microsoft said that Intel does no longer support this product.

    That Mobo has the intel 845G chipset, I suggest downloading the last available driver from Intel.

    Download and install this one first
    "IntelĀ® Chipset Software Installation Utility"

    then this one
    "IntelĀ® Application Accelerator"

    Be sure to choose the 845G column

    see if the errors stop.

    You have to go to the HARD DRIVE manufacturers website to get the HARD DRIVE diagnostic.

    If you don't know what brand of hard drive you have do this.

    Go here; http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

    Download SIW Standalone. This is an executable that doesn't have to be installed on your machine. Just download it to the desktop and launch the application. After the application launches click on STORAGE DEVICES in the left pane. When the right hand side pane opens see what information is provided For DIRECT ACCESS DEVICE regarding vendor and model.

    If you want to delete SIW Standalone just right click on the desktop icon and delete it. You may want to keep it since it is handy for finding information for your machine.

    to Mumbodog: i already have both Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Intel Application Accelerator installed on my computer. I also am sure i got the right one, 845G. But thank you anyways for the help you are offering.

    to win2kpro: I did what you said:

    Could it be that I should update my BIOS version?

    Something else: when windows starts everytime i get this blue screen that says its checking the disk space. When it reaches the 6% it stops, so i have to restart windows and skip the disk check.

    I know they are on there, I suggest you install the last version Intel provided at the link.

    I've downloaded SeaTools from the Seagate website.

    S.M.A.R.T. Check won't start.
    Short Drive Self Test reports an error and cannot complete - FAIL
    Long Drive Self Test reports an arror and cannot complete - FAIL

    Only the Short Generic completes succesfully.

    The Identify Test shows as result:
    48-bit address feature set supported - FALSE
    SMART - Supported
    SMART self-test supported - FALSE
    SMART error logging supported - FALSE
    Firmware Revision: 3.19
    Max LBA: 156301488

    I got the latest version of Intel Application Accelerator, although I cannot install the Intel Media Accelerator.

    As Win 2K suggests, you need a new hard drive.

    But that means i loose all the data i've saved on my Seagate hard drive until now.

    Can i just switch off power, remove the hard drive, put new one in and everything is fine? What brand/type of hard drive do you guys recommend for my system?

    Are you sure it's my hard drive causing problems or is there a good chance there is something else causing this failor?
