Intermittent error which causes reboot

    I have an intermittent error which either freezes the computer are causes it to reboot. This error has continued even though I have formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. This leads me to suspect that I may have a hardware issue. The next time this happens exactly how do I get to the error logs or wherever else a description of this problem may be recorded so I can give you folks sufficient dataTo be able to possibly ferret out the problem

    Download and run Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy
    After it runs click File, Publish Snapshot, then paste the link provided here.

    Minitoolbox log
    Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
    Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices (Only Problems)
    • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    • List Restore Points

    Click on Go.

    Post the resulting log in your next reply.

    Additional info from 1st report. Since the last crash when I run the computer for more than an hour or so. Some programs such as Windows Explorer refused to open. When I open Computer tag a hard drive and attempt to explore it It will not open.These programs and several others will appear in the taskbar in the bottom of the home screen, but will not expand to full screen.I have had several instances where when the computer locked up the fans appeared to go into overdrive almost as if the power supply. "Corsair 850 W gold rate" had switched from 115 V to 230 V. When that happened. I immediately shut the computer down. The case is a full tower computer master HAF with a CPU cooler chosen for being very quiet as well as handling high heat. When I built the computer several years ago I burned it in by overclocking it to 4.7 GHz and running it for several weeks using Folding at Home with the room at 70°F. And even in that situation. The computer was quieter than several stock computers I have used at work.Since the initial " burn in" I have not found it necessary to run the computer at more than its stock 3.4 GHz.

    Please note I am disabled and spend 20 hours plus a day in bed. This computer is my main source of entertainment and window into the world. I tried to build this computer out of high-grade parts and powerful enough so that it would not become obsolete and could last me a long period of time. Unfortunately I live at in an extremely rural area and would have to travel 70 miles round-trip to have it serviced. Fortunately I can do simple work, such as swapping out power supplies and motherboards myself if necessary.

    reply to be sent in 2 sections as 100000 characters seems to be max.

    Core temp runs in background and was set to hibernate system in 30 seconds if temp reaches 90 degrees centigrade. I just changed it to shut down system if 80 is reached in 5 seconds. The problems can occur when system is under minimal stress such as when I am reading an e-book with only ordinary background processes running. In general when unstressed core temp indicates the hottest the cores get is in the low 30's when just reading or browsing. Of course I have never checked or had the chance to check when emergency happens. I am sure the latest issue with some programs not opening just started after a recent involuntary shot down but that does not explain why I get shut downs after a reformat and restore of basic OS and programs.

    Your tjmax was 98, I believe normal is 68. I'd check your thermal paste then maybe your CPU.

    Please help me to understand what you mean by what you have said

    When I checked the TI max for the I 7 2600 was 98°C and given variance in sensors throttling generally began at that temperature, plus or -5°. Unless it is a case of an extremely rapid peak, because in my ordinary usage core temp indicates very brief peaks of no more than in the high 50s, When I read overclocking sites they frequently recommended that CPUs not be subjected to a continuous temperature of more than 65 or 70°C.

    Some months ago I noticed that my temperatures had risen significantly over their usual average. I then performed a rigorous cleaning of my CPU cooler as well as a general vacuuming of the interior of the system. Then I installed fine-mesh filters over all intakes and since then my temperatures have decreased to their usual 30s except when I initially invoke difficult programs where I will see a brief temperature spike in the low 50s.

    If you really believe that my problems etiology is due to overheating of the CPU. I will pull the cooler, clean off the old paste, and reinstall using a high grade paste. As the cooler is massive in its size and working space very tight the project is not very appealing but I will do so if you feel that there is a high probability that overheating of the CPU and not other motherboard or chip problems are the cause.

    I had the same thought and had already downloaded the program. I know I have one memory slot that is very picky about the memory stick being seated "just right" I thought maybe I had disturbed it putting in a hard drive or something. Well tomorrow will tell the story on that.

    I tried running mem test all night. However, in the morning even though the computer was still on I was unable to get the screen to register anything. Then when I tried to reboot the computer went into what appeared to be an infinite recycle of attempting to start shutting off attempting to start again, and so forth. I tried shutting it down, then Turning it on again several times to no avail. I unplugged it for about 3 or 4 hours and then when I restarted it. It started the same thing again. However, when I turned it off and then back on it booted as regular And has done so several times now

    I had reset core temp to hibernate computer at 65°C and Just now when I turned it on. I got a message about overheating and shut down. I moved the shutdown temperature to 75°C and the computer booted and is running fine and now is maintaining the temperature in the 30s.

    Given that I have reinstalled Windows several times and still wind up with the original intermittent shutdown and the current problems I have decided to pull the cooler and replace the heatsink paste. Although time intensive that appears to be the least expensive option I have now. Once I have done that if I continue to have problems I can try pulling memory sticks from 2 slots and if problems continue replace in those slots and pull from the other 2 slots. If I continue to have problems I can swap out power supplies with a 650 W I have as backup. After that, it's time for a new CPU and motherboard.

    If you can think of a better way for me to proceed or have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you for attempting to help me resolve this problem

    If you know which RAM slot is giving you issues, try taking the RAM out of that slot and trying again. If it's that that slot is faulty there's no need to spend more money.

    Ok, that would be the least problem to try. I don't know which slot but as there are only 4 which have to operate in pairs I can swap out each pair one after the other. That would certainly be less time intensive than re-greasing the CPU and would leave me with 8 gigs and with what I currently do that would be adequate.

    well I tried switching memory multiple ways when simple pulling and replacing the 0&1with 3&4 then using 2 modules at the time then switching modules and other than one modules supercilious (not overclocking) heat sink coming loose nothing worked. Now computer refuses to boot just going back to strobe.

    Maybe next its time to order new heat sink grease and try that and while mother board is out of case make positive memory is properly seated as I have a giant tower heat sink that makes accessing memory a real problem. The heat sink is for ultra quiet operation as computer is hooked in with audio/video system. If that does not work it may be time for a new build. By the tine I pay a repair shop I will have spent half what a new motherboard and cpu would cost. After I ruling out memory and overheating CPU its most likely a bad motherboard.

    Wish I still lived in Atlanta where I knew several little Asian shops that did good work and did not try to rip off people like the big box stores do. (RANT)

    Right now I am using an antique laptop running a lite Linux distro.

    Any other suggestions?
