Intermittent keyboard problem

I have a Gateway Solo 9550 laptop, about 2 yrs old. Last month it suddenly would not type the letter "m" . I tried cleaning under the keys, etc. but could not find anything blocking it. At the same time, other keys did not work either (all the rest of the letter keys were OK, but things like Ctrl, Fn, Tab, Alt, etc). I rebooted, problem still there, ran a full virus scan and suddenly everything was fine, although it detected no viruses. Was fine for about a month, and then the same thing happened again, only this time it's lasting much longer and it comes and goes. I've tried using System Restore to an earlier point when it was working fine with no change, so I am assuming at this point that it is a hardware issue.

Does this sound like the keyboard is beginning to fail? Do they do that sometimes where it is intermittent, and also only certain keys? Or could a connection pin, etc. be the problem? I was thinking of disconnecting the keyboard and then plugging in a USB keyboard to see if that solves it, but we only have a keyboard with the older connection, not USB. Any other way to diagnose it?

BTW, in order to type this message, I had to copy and paste every "m" I used.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please do the following:

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also, to make it easier on you, every time you need to type the letter "m" use the *. I will understand and you won't have to copy and paste.

I don't see anything in the log that would account for that. Of course, we could dig deeper and look for spyware that doesn't appear in the log but I'm inclined to think it's a hardware issue also.

You could pick up a PS/2 to USB adapter and then try the other keyboard to see if the problem persists.

Thanks. I didn't know you could get a USB/ps2 adaptor so that helps a lot. I will look for one this weekend and give it a try before springing for a new keyboard.
How long do laptops generally last? my last one lasted about 4 yrs before the hinges on the screen broke and it wasn't worth fixing. This one is now about 3.5 yrs old (just found paperwork that I got it in July 02 instead of 03 like I'd thought). I'm on my 2nd battery and it's not holding a charge longer than 30 minutes. I'm wondering if replacing battery and keyboard are going to be worth it on a 3.5 yr old computer. I don't need anything bigger or faster, etc.; it does everything I need it to.

It sounds like it may be on its last lap. :D Sorry, couldn't resist.

Depending on its use, whether or not its ever been dropped or had something spilled on it, from what I have read, 4 or 5 years is darn good for a laptop.

I don't think I would invest a lot of money on repairs at this point but that's just my own opinion.

I finally got an adaptor and tried hooking up our other keyboard, but Windows won't recognize it. I haven't tried disconnecting the onboard keyboard, thinking we could just disable it in the device manager and have the other take over. I did print out directions for replacing the keyboard, so I know how to remove it, but I was hoping to avoid that while still in the diagnostics phase. The keyboard I was trying to add is just a basic Gateway one included with our desktop (and no, I'm not a big Gateway fan but dh used to work for them so we got some good deals)

The problem is still on and off. It went a whole day or so with no problem and then went on and off while I was in the midst of writing a letter.

Will the computer recognize a 2nd keyboard or is there something specific I need to do for it to do so?

The keyboard will function but will not have all of it's extra features working unless you install the drivers. However, since the problem relates to the actual keys, this test to me indicates that the keyboard is not the problem.

Let's run some programs and see if there's anything that's not showing in the HijackThis log.

Download Cleanup from Here
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Run Cleanup:
  • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
  • Once its done, close the program.

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

OK, I ran everything you suggested and nothing was found. while it was running, my dh tried hooking that PS/2 keyboard to his laptop with the adaptor and it could not recognize it either. BOth laptops see a USB device but cannot identify what it is in order to load drivers I guess.
So I think it could still be the keyboard.
Anyway, here is the log (Panda and Ewido didn't create a log b/c nothing was found)

Unless the keyboard was originally designed to operate via either USB or a USB to PS2 adapter, the the keyboard will not be seen by WIndows.

The keyboard electronics probably do not support it.

Same goes for mice, only those designed for either use will function with an adapter (which is supplied with the mouse).

Just wanted to let you know what's going on with the keyboard problem. I have not been able to test it with another keyboard b/c it's so intermittent. It had become very frequent but now has gone back to only once every few days. B/c of that it's hard to know when i'll need a keyboard to try it, so I really need one standing by all the time. I guess for now I'm just going to live with it and see if it becomes more regular.
If I'm able to test it with another keyboard I'll post back in case it helps someone else but it may be awhile. Thanks for all your help.
