I d/l alot of stuff from various sites that have resuming downloads, my ISP disconnects me after 2hours and I cannot reconnect until I restart my machine. Is there anyway that I can disconnect before 2 hours is up and then reconnect automatically? I used to use the Internet Options to do this but I can't now because I use messenger which makes the computer think that the connection is constantly in use. I need some kind of connection control programme.

Cheers.

Hiya

Are you saying that you want a program that just sorts out your connection? The downloads that you are using: After you get kicked off, do you need to start downloading from the start again?

If so, have a look at these:

http://www.webattack.com/get/getit.shtml
http://www.webattack.com/get/freshdownload.shtml
http://www.webattack.com/get/dlexpress.shtml

Also, these are for the connection.

Thanks for that - but my problem is slightly different

I stay connected fine for two hours - then my ISP kicks me off - nothing I do seems to change this. Somehow this upsets my settings and I can't reconnect until I restart What I need to do is find a programme that will let me disconnect after 1hr 45mins ... wait a few secs .... then reconnect. This will zero the clock and my d/l will resume for another 1hr 45 and so on. I don't suppose you know of anything that'll do that do you?

Thanks

Did your ISP tell you that their policy is to disconnect users after two hours? If so, consider switching to a different ISP. This policy certainly isn't common.

If they didn't tell you this was policy, then call them to ask why it's happening.

I think that there may be international differences on this subject - I know of several people who have the same problem.

It's written into the contract of some ISP's (In the UK,) so that people don't stay permanently online.

I use Freeserve at work, and I have a free connection with NTL at home and they both do the same.

The UK is apparrently the worst place in the western World for internet access - this must be just one of the reasons why. AND I can't even get broadband at work yet!!!!!

My ISP made it policy to disconnect everyone ( even on unlimited service paying $24.95 per month) every 3 hrs. I did this for 3 yrs
until finally cable came here & there is absolutely nothing you can do to keep the connection alive when your ISP is disconnecting you.
Like Max said.. If there is another ISP (I had no choice )you can go to for services that doesn't do this ....it may be worth the difference in cost.

It would be possible for me to change my ISP. The problem is that my e-mail address is printed on all of my company letter heads and cards n stuff - so to change would be quite costly.

All I need to do is find a programme that will disconnect me after a specified time and then reconnect me.

I dont mind being disconnected, as my d/l's will resume when i reconnect. It's just that if i leave the isp to disconnect me then i cannot reconnect until i restart. Which means i can't leave the PC alone. for extended periods.

Willwalk why don't you set it up on a pre-exiting account in LAN connections... automatically connecting. That way when it disconnects it will reconnect w/ out prompting.

I had my old one like that. Perhaps someone else can better instruct you on how to do that. I don't have it to look at anymore.

If you need a permanent e-mail address for business, then I would definitely recommend that you never use your ISP's e-mail accounts. You can get free permanent web e-mail addresses from places like Yahoo and Hotmail. NetIdentity also offers e-mail for a fee.

If you really can't afford or don't want to pay to change all your letterhead and business cards, then you're stuck with whatever service level and problems that your ISP gives you.

That - Savvylady - Sounds a good idea. Now all i need to know is how to set up a 'pre-exiting account in LAN connections... automatically connecting.'

Go to ....
start/settings/control panel/internet options/connections & just under the window... click on dial whenever a connection is not present.

That should take care of it for you Willwalk. if not come back & let us know...ok?

Savvy :)

this is not LAN by the way... its your regular connection ( dialup )

That is the most simple way of re-connecting - which now does not work.

Once my computer has disconnected I cannot reconnect until i restart. Thats if i am disconnected at the end of 2hrs by my ISP.

I simply need a program that will disconnect me from the internet after a specified amount of time, Not the standard windows settings.

If that didn't work I don't know why. Hmmm..... Let me see if I can get someone else to look at this .

You can check here under "Networking>DialupTools" or one of the other catagories. You may find what your looking for.

Good luck......
