    Hello,

My internet connection is droping every couple minutes, and the only solution i've been able to find so far is to release and renew my ipconfig, it started happening about 2 weeks ago and its pretty annoying i cant have a simple skype call completed nor browse a site just nothing.

I've contacted my ISP and they say the modem and their end are fine, also i've noticed that when it drops i cant access the modem, tho some applications just seem to lag, as if there was a little connection? that doesnt really makes sense to me but its what it looks like.

I dont think its a virus because i have a legal license for Kaspersky Internet Security, and i dont think its KIS either because i've tryed disabling it, i do use Ccleaner a lot (like 20 times a day maybe more) but it has never caused any issues before.

    Here are my system specs:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11
    Processor Count: 4
    RAM: 8191 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512, 512 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 99899 MB, Free - 51730 MB; D: Total - 376937 MB, Free - 163095 MB; E: Total - 953866 MB, Free - 315540 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P5Q PRO TURBO
    Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security, Disabled

And i have a 4mb cable modem connection.

I really hope you guys can help me with this its really stressing, I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL AND ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE.

can we see the following when its working and then repeat ALL the tests when it disconnects

Are you connected to the router via a cable or via wireless - if wireless also inclue the xirrus screen shot

Are there any other devices connected and how connected wireless or cable to the router and do they work all OK ? -

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
    to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
    Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

    Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

    Type the following command
    Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
    Post back the results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    Type the following command
    Ping google.com
    Post back the results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    Type the following command
    Ping 209.183.226.152
    post back results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
    Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

    http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://wpc.475a.edgecastcdn.net/00475A/XirrusWiFiInspectorSetup.1.2.0.exe

    {If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

    Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
    Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

    Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/

not sure why 192.168.100.1 gave you a reply - something must be on the system with that IP

the default gateway is 192.168.0.1 - so thats the number to ping
anyone else having the problem at all

FYI--that's the modem. For examples, my Motorola modem has that IP and I can ping it; at least one Motorola modem/router combo can be addressed both by its router's LAN IP and by its modem IP (192.168.100.1).

The problem is upstream of your modem. The problem could be the cable side of the modem itself, in the cabling to the next router upstream, or in the next router upstream.

I've heard stories about Motorola modems going bad, so that's where I'd start. What happens when you remove power from the modem, then plug it back in and allow it to reconnect?

You might also browse into the modem and see what its settings and logs have to say.

Regardless of what your ISP says, the problem is upstream of your modem, and appears to be a DNS failure. That is suggested from your post 10 where you successfully pinged techguy.org by its IP address while failing to ping google.com when specifying the site by name.

You might try using different DNS servers than those provided by your ISP. I have that problem here sometimes; the ISP's DNS goes down and all browsing stops except that browsing I do through TOR. I have not had the problem since adding a DNS that is way outside the ISP's system. Search for publicly available DNS in your region.
