Internet Connection Problems With Xp

i have a cable internet connection which connects through a LAN.when i use win xp as the operating system the internet works fine for 3-7 days then it stops connecting to the gateway.the error message i get i - cannot contact the server.if i connect the the same internet cable to another pc having win98se or win2000 then it works fine.
what might be the problem.
please help me out.
i have checked my system for viruses and did not find any.
I HAVE NOTICED ONE THING.THE SENT PACKETS IS ACTIVE BUT THE RECEIVED PACKETS IS INACTIVE(NO DATA IS BEING RECEIVED-ONLY ONE LIGHT IS BLINKING)
i am using win xp professional
please help me out.
