    Hi Guys;

I have a lap top - Dell with windows 7 and a Desktop - Emachine with windows vista. My router is a Belkin and we have a modem from the phone co. called Zhone. For quite some time (over a year) we have had problems with our internet. Sometimes it works and then after a few days it doesn't,, so we have to unplug both the router and modem for about 20 sec. and then plug back in. This solves the problem for a few days, but then it starts all over again. We get the Internet Explorer message saying-IE cannot display webpage- would you like to diagnose problem? and it never solves anything. Please help, the tech team at the phone co. are getting tired of talking to me. They even sent out someone to check out our system, he did alittle rewiring and the next day it was failing to connect again.

    Frustrated and confused![IMG]

is this just on a wired connection or also wireless

is this everything thats connected or just one machine

lets see the following when working and then repeat ALL the test when disconnected - include xirrus if also using wireless

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
    to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
    Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

    Type the following command
    Ping {plus the number thats shown against the default gateway shown in above ipconfig /all}
    Post back the results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    Type the following command
    Ping google.com
    Post back the results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    Type the following command
    Ping 209.183.226.152
    post back results
    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
    Download and install

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

    http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://wpc.475a.edgecastcdn.net/00475A/XirrusWiFiInspectorSetup.1.2.0.exe

    {If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

    Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
    Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

    Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/

 I did all the test during a brief period of internet connection. I hope they tell you something about why it constantly does this. Then I hard wired just the desk top without the router, and the internet was fine. It stayed connected the whole time with no interruptions. Some how my router is causing the problem. It is either the wiring or some commands that are wrong in the installation. Please help me.

I just need to clarify some points
    1) does the PC work OK when wired to the router or is it just wireless - from your comment above, I assume from your problem is with anything connected to the router , wireless or wired - is that correct ?
    2) Do all the PCs connected to the router , disconnect
    3) The tests - we also need to see all the tests again when the connection has disconnected , including the ping to google.com

you asked a few questions, I will answer.

    1. Not able to connect to internet without having to reboot (unplug for 15 sec. then replug). Wired desktop when not connected to router works perfectly with no internet glitches or stoppages. When
either are hooked up to router they both have the same connection problems and glitches. When laptop is hooked up to the router it has the same interferances as above. So it seems it is the router that is the problem.

    2. Yes, all disconnect.

    3. I just rebooted router so as soon as it starts acting up I will do the same series of test for you.

Some added information...Yesterday when internet message came up "IE cannot display Webpage" , I ran the troubleshooter and it came back saying that the Firewalls seem to be blocking connections. Then today I got the same - IE cannot display, I ran the troubleshooter again and got a different message that said...DNS server is not responding. So I am not sure what the heck is going on or is it just my router is a piece of junk? My husband believes the later is the case. Should I just buy a better router and what brand and model do you suggest?

we can try a few things before you replace the router - lets do this with the PC connected with a cable to the router - then we can worry about any wireless issues later

you have posted the ipconfig /all and ping tests - so we need to see those when it disconnects
also the Status of all the lights on the router and modem when working and then when disconnects

you need a space between the work PING and the rest of the command
can you also do all three of the PING tests
    Ping 192.168.2.1
    Ping google.com
    Ping 209.183.226.152

thats showing a good connection to the internet - via the wireless adapter

so we have something blocking the internet on that PC

just to confirm, when you did the PING tests - all devices connected to the router disconnected and would not work - correct ?

what was the status of the lights on the router?
