    Hey there,
Last month I ran ad-aware on my boyfriend's computer, innocently assuming it would fix some things up, as it always had on mine. Instead, it caused something to happen so that he has no internet connection anymore. We tried everything-- of course we called his service provider to see if that was down, then we fooled with internet settings, and all those different options. Obviously ad-aware got rid of something necessary to the internet connection-- however he immediately deleted ad-aware so that I was unable to try and restore whatever had been messed up.
I know we are going to need to take the computer somewhere, but I was just wondering if anyone on these boards had any advice- for instance has this ever happened to you, and is there any simple way to fix it? He's been going without internet for a month because he's had no time to take the computer anywhere.
Ahhhh-- sorry for the long post, thanks for reading!

What type of internet connection does he have? (AOL, cable, DSL, satellite?)

Which version of Windows are you using?

Is it a stand-alone computer or part of a network?

His connection is cable, it's Road Runner. His computer is stand alone, windows 98.

And I can't believe Ad-aware would ruin his internet... how especially perfect since he had just had his whole hard drive redone. How would it ruin his computer but not mine?

There was a version of Ad-aware that improperly fixed broken LSP (Layered Service Provider) chains which can cause your Internet Connection to fail.

Download and run LSP-Fix. You can find a tutorial on how to use this program here:

Using LSP-Fix to remove Spyware & Hijackers

Do NOT remove anything, but jot down the list of dll's in the Keep section and let me know what they are.

Thanks, I'll want to try that. But how do I download it on my boyfriend's computer if he has no internet connection?

Ok I will do that. Question though, I've never dl'd a program and then put it on a disk before. I assume it's an easy process? And then the program will be easy to find on his computer after inserting the disk? Thanks so much for your help!

When you click on the link to download the program it should ask you what directory you would like to save it to. Just make sure you h ave a floppy in your machine and specify the A: drive to save it to.

Then your boyfriends computer, double click on my computer then double click on the A: drive. When it opens run lsp-fix

Ok cool, i understand now. :) I won't be able to get to his computer for about a week, any chance you'll still be able to help me then? Maybe through email, or this board if you'll still be checking it... you're really helpful!

Also when you visit your boyfriends computer, run hijackthis on there as well and paste the log on here with the info from lsp-fix. It may tell us which LSP to fix if the LSP's are the problem.

I will be here or at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com, you can find me at either place.

I will run both the lsp program and hijackthis, and I'll get back to you next week with info and logs. Thanks again!
