I use XP home and IE has gone wrong lately. It never seems to load a page first time and is very slow. I normally get a 404 error page or "parameter incorrect" or if its a forum I sometimes get a maintainance being carried out page the first time I open a new page. I have to refresh (sometimes several times) before it loads the page properly. It shouldn't be giving these errors as they aren't true.

I have done everything I can think of. Full error check, virus check with Norton and latest updates. I have also cleared out cookies and temp internet files, cleaned registry and cache. I have also run spyware removal programs spy bot and ad-aware. I have also re-installed IE but nothing seems to have worked. It is this version of IE 6.2.2800.1106xpsp2.030422-1633

Also, When I type an email in hotmail, or enter something in google, or type a post for a forum it sometimes randomly converts some of what I wrote to random code. This also happened just now when I clicked a link in ebay, this page came up...

Unknown Host

Possibly there is a problem with the language settings?

Everything else on my computer (including all other internet apps) are working fine.

Any ideas? thanks.

Download Hijackthis.
Create a folder on your hard drive and save it there.
Unzip the file and extract it to the folder you have created.
Scan your machine, then click on Save Log.

Post a copy back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

These are the only 2 things I see.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [tkonnect] C:\Program Files\Tiscali\tkonnect\tkonnect.exe updatemode
O4 - Startup: eMule.lnk = C:\Program Files\eMule\emule.exe

emule.exe is a kazaa related program

tkonnect.exe you can read about here
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_t.htm it is apparently unnecessary.

One thing I do not see is anti-virus protection.

I dont think removing them will help as I have had both of those going a lot longer then I have had this problem for.

Could it not be something to do with language setting?

Well I did that IE6 fix thing above but no joy. I have given up on IE and downloaded Opera. It is faster and I am at least able to use the internet in some capacity but I still am occasionally getting strange inaccurate errors and having to refresh pages to display them properly :(

Time to look at the next likely offender which would be the firewall..

I have turned the firewall I was using (sygate free version) off as a test. Still having the same problems. Opera is now getting progressively worse. Just tried to run the browser (opera.exe) and got an exception error message. Don't know if its important (or relevant) but in "the following files will be included in this error report" bit of the "error report contents" it lists a file called "appcompat.txt" which is in a "WER2.tmp.dir00" folder in the "temp" directory.

Tried to run it again and it loads fine.

Strange things are happening to my PC but only where browsers are concerned. I get a lot of "page cannot be displayed" pages now, it requires numerous refreshes to get the page. In fact every page I look at these days takes several attempts before it loads without errors, or at all.

Its althought whatever I type in a browser (whether in search engine, address box, or text window) or even text I havent entered (like a link in a page) often gets corrupted and turns into something which confuses the browser and leads to errors.

Also, It takes me many attempts to post on here, I keep getting "invalid thread link" message.

Anyone got any further ideas?

Appcompat.txt is an error file generated by the compatibility mode of Windows XP when a program crashes unexpectedly.

Make note of the location of the file and open it in notepad. The contents may give you a clue as to what caused the crash.

Maybe post the contents of appcompat.txt in your next reply.

Well the file doesn't exist anymore it was just a temp file. I dont think its relavent to the wider problem anyway.
