I am using WindowsXP Pro with service pack 1.

The main problem is, I cannot connect to secure web sites like Gmail and hotmail, or download from secure sources like Windows Update or Battle.net [they both send back error messages].

All other websites are accessible.

I've called my ISP and we tried everything they knew. It has to be a problem on my side.

I've done three different virus scans, all with updates that follow the date on which the problems began. I've done several spyware and adware scans, too. Everything's clean.

I did the HiJackThis scan, and this is what I got:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2

This is as close as the error code gets.

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you see the 0x8007043B error

Problem description

This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured properly in the registry.

Applicable operating systems

Windows 2000

Windows XP

Windows Server 2003

Resolutions
1. Add WUAUSERV and BITS to the SvcHost process
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type REGEDIT.
Click OK.
The Registry Editor opens.
*WARNING*
Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Navigate to the following key:HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost.
Double-click to open the netsvcs key.
Under Value Data.
Add BITS and WUAUSERV to the list of services.
Click OK.
Exit the registry.
Restart the system.

As I said before, Microsoft provides free tech support for windows update. If you can connect to their main page you might get additional help there. I does, however, take some few days.

The troubleshooter came up dry for me, but I guess I didn't look hard enough. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mimo, here is the result of the TD3 scan, but as I told you, it still says that I need to update the database even though I followed the directions to perform a manual update. Do I need to register the scanner?

In additon to above have you run,SFC,Scan disk,or ever tried MS Tweakui. I know you can't down load from MS, but some one else could for you. Just some thoughts.
