This is probably resolved with a simple internet options change, but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

If I visit certain sites by linking to them, Internet explorer just closes out completely. I can still get to those sites by copying the link, opening a new Internet explorer, and pasting the link in my address bar.

Sample link that closes IE for me:

    http://www.sptimes.com/2004/11/19/Tampabay/Gunman_kills_two__sel.shtml

I can get to the above link by going through the sptimes website, but if I try to click a link someone put on their webpage for it it closes my internet explorer.

I'm using WindowsXP, IE 6.0, and I run ad-aware like twice a week. The problem has been around for a while, not sure what to do about it. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Download Adaware Se from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.
The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.
Under the Scanning button:Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected
    Under the Advanced button, Check
Move deleted files to recycle bin
    Include additional object information
    Include negligible object information
    Include environment information
Under the defaults button Set the homepage you wish to have set as default.
    Under the tweak button
Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile
In Cleaning Engine: XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion
Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom
    _______________________________________________________________
Create a folder on your hard drive somewhere like in "My Documents" and name it Hijackthis
Download 'Hijack This to its own folder http://www.spyware911.net/downloads/HijackThis.exe
    Doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here.

    Most of what it lists
will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Rescan with hijack and put a check next to these entries then close all browser windows and click "fix checked"

Then run a scan here http://www.spyware911.net/xcleaner.htm

    Reboot and try things out.

I did all of the above, and cleaned out two files found with the 911 scan. However, when I still open certain windows in Internet Explorer, it closes the browser all together. Sometimes it asks me to send an error report to microsoft, other times it just shuts down.

    Time for a repair

    Method 1
    * From the start menu select Run.
    * Type in SFC /SCANNOW ( Note: There is a space between sfc and / )
    * Follow any prompts throughout the System File Checker process
    * Reboot the system when System File checker completes
    Method 2
    * From the start menu select Search then select "all files and folders"
    * Select more advanced options and check to have it search for hidden files and folders
    * Ensure that system & subfolders are also checked
    * In the all or parf of the file name box type IE.INF
    * Select C drive or the drive letter of the xp installation
    * Click Search
    * In the search results pane right click the find in the Windows\inf folder and select install
    * Reboot the system when the file copy process is complete

Not sure if this is related or not...I don't know why I've got these problems.

I started the SFC /SCANNOW and sure enough about 20% of the way through it asked me to insert my windows XP disk. I opened the tray and put the disk in, but it did not recognize it. I opened My Computer, and the D: drive is not showing up. I tried restarting and it's still not there. It is getting power cause the tray opens, and it is plugged in both to the motherboard and the drive itself. I went into Device Manager and there is no option for CD that I can find.

Any suggestions on this new path of woe?

Ok, sub-problem fixed. My CD-ROM drive is working again. I ran the SFC/ SCANOW with my XP disk already in the drive, and it never prompted me to do anything. I did notice the CD drive in use, so I'm hoping that was the only prompt it asked for. I went and tried a link that has failed in the past and it worked. However I tried a java link and it closed my IE again. I'll post a new Hijack log, but I'm wondering if my Java settings are messed up?
