I am experiencing some serius lag with Internet Explorer lately. The most evident cases are when I go onto forums like this. It takes a while for my words to appear on screen, even as I'm typing this. Scrolling throgh pages is a real hassle. Even clicking on links takes atleast 5 seconds to register.

System specs are Windows 98SE, 192 MB of Ram, I'm running on a Cable connection, I've applied all the updates with Windows Update, and my average system recources free is 90%.

    Hi lakz ,

Start with updating your Anti-Virus software Definitions and scanning your system in Safe Mode.
The following link can assist you in starting your computer in Safe Mode

Or , Have your computer scanned with one of the following free online Virus Scanners ,

Should one of the above scans detect a Trojan , Download and Run TrojanHunter 3.7 (30 day trial) http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/

If you have Kazaa installed , uninstall it in ADD/Remove Programs in the control panel , Reboot your computer and follow-up with KazaaBegone http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kazaabegone.zip Unzip KazaaBegone to a Temp Folder , Run KazaaBegone then again Shutdown & Reboot your computer
Don't have Kazaa , Skip the Kazaa step and continue with the following ,

Download CWShredder , Unzip to the Desktop www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip
Close all browser windows , check the Taskbar for minimized windows as well , To run CWShredder hit the ''Next'' button , Then reboot your computer when its finished

Next , download and install Spybot search & destroy www.security.kolla.de Open Spybot search & destroy , Click Online , Search for updates , Download all available updates , log offline , Close all browser windows , check your taskbar for minimized windows as well , Run Spybot search & destroy , put a check in every entry Spybot search & destroy returns , Click fix problems. Reboot again.

Consider installing SpywareBlaster v2.6.1 and SpywareGuard v2.2 for the prevention of both Spyware Active X installation and running , and Browser Hijacking protection in real-time http://www.wilderssecurity.net/index.html

Finish with downloading Hijack This version 1.97 , Unzip Hijack This to your Desktop www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ Press the scan button , the scan button becomes save log button , (Do not fix anything yet) save the log to the Desktop , Return to this thread , Copy and paste your log to the forum

    Good luck

It is the Visual Basic Virtual Machine, v. 6.00.8964 ... you can get it here:

Vbrun60sp5.exe contains the run-time files shipped with Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 5.

Vbrun60.exe contains the run-time files shipped with Visual Studio 6.0 without any service pack updates.

You could also download Ad-Aware 6 and have it do a thorough cleaning of your unwanted files.

Go here for the free Ad-Aware 6 Personal Build 181: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

Launch the program ... on the start-up screen, you will need to first run the Webupdate Feature (globe at the top), or click "check for updates" to get the Reference File up to date.

Please use the Custom Scan with Memory and Both registry scans ON. Also.... make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.

Then see that you have these options checked:
Under Ad-Aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Scanning Engine:
    "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under Ad-Aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

    Next ...

    Run Ad-Aware 6.
Mark the objects you wish to eliminate for removal. There are many options available with a right-click.
Make a Quarantine only if you do not have the Auto-Quarantine option ON.
Then choose "Next" to remove the chosen objects.
    Finally ... Reboot
